Tongerlo
Tongerlo is a village and ''deelgemeente'' (sub-municipality) of the municipality of Westerlo in the province of Antwerp, Belgium. The village is located about south-east of the city of Herentals. Tongerlo is best known for Tongerlo Abbey founded in 1128 which became one of the most important abbeys of Belgium. History In 1128, the Premonstratensian abbey of Tongerlo was founded in the village of Tongerlo. It was double monastery until 1140. The abbey developed into one of the most important abbeys of Belgium. The abbot became the Lord of the village ''heerlijkheid'' (landed estate), and used to have joint judicial powers. In 1644, the abbey bought full judicial powers for the ''heerlijkheid''. The power of the abbey started to decline after 1773. In 1789 and 1790, the abbey participated in the Brabant Revolution against the Austrian Netherlands. The revolutionaries were defeated, and abbey lost control over the ''heerlijkheid''. Tongerlo Abbey
Tongerlo Abbey is a Premonstratensian monastery at Tongerlo in Westerlo near Antwerp, Belgium. History It was founded in 1128 in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary, by Giselbert of Kasterlee, who not only gave the land, but also himself became a lay brother in the new community. The first monks were sent from St. Michael's Abbey, Antwerp, under Henry, who had come with Saint Norbert, founder of the Premonstratensian Order, to Antwerp to extirpate the Tanchelmite heresies. The charter of its foundation was signed, amongst others, by Bernard of Clairvaux and by Waltman, first abbot of Antwerp. The Bishop of Cambrai granted synodal rights to the abbots. From small beginnings the abbey became influential in the district called Campine, now in north-east Belgium and the south of the Netherlands, then a wild area. Westerlo () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Antwerp. The municipality comprises seven towns: * Westerlo centrum * * Tongerlo * Heultje * Voortkapel * Oosterwijk * In 2021, Westerlo had a total population of 25,288. The total area is 55.13 km². Places of interest *Castle of Westerlo has been in the possession of the House of Merode uninterruptedly since the late 15th century. It has served as the most important country estate of the senior branch since the 16th century. In 1910-12 Countess Jeanne de Merode built a new neogothic castle for herself which serves as the town hall of Westerlo since the 1970s. *Tongerlo Abbey contains a very old and fine copy of Leonardo da Vinci's '' The Last Supper''. Premonstratensian
The Order of Canons Regular of Prémontré (), also known as the Premonstratensians, the Norbertines and, in Britain and Ireland, as the White Canons (from the colour of their habit), is a religious order of canons regular of the Catholic Church founded in Prémontré near Laon in 1120 by Norbert of Xanten, who later became Archbishop of Magdeburg. Premonstratensians are designated by ''OPraem'' (''Ordo Praemonstratensis'') following their name.
