Tong Yang (mathematician)
Tong Yang () is a Chinese mathematician known for his contributions to the field of partial differential equations and kinetic theory. He has been serving as a Chair Professor of Mathematical Science in the Department of Applied Mathematics at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) since 2020. Previously, he held the position of President of The Hong Kong Mathematical Society from 2016 to 2020 in 2016-2020. Education Yang completed his Ph.D. in 1993 at the University of California, Davis in USA, after earning his bachelor's and master's degrees from Zhongshan University in 1987 and 1990, respectively. Research Yang's research focuses on partial differential equations and kinetic theory. In collaboration with Tai-Ping Liu, he introduced the Liu-Yang functional, which is used to evaluate the stability of BV solutions in systems of hyperbolic conservation laws. In physics, a conservation law states that a particular measurable property of an isolated physical system does not change as the system evolves over time. Exact conservation laws include conservation of mass-energy, conservation of linear momentum, conservation of angular momentum, and conservation of electric charge. There are also many approximate conservation laws, which apply to such quantities as mass, parity, lepton number, baryon number, strangeness, hypercharge, etc. These quantities are conserved in certain classes of physics processes, but not in all. Tai-Ping Liu
Tai-Ping Liu (; born 18 November 1945) is a Taiwanese mathematician specializing in partial differential equations. Education and career Liu earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1968 from National Taiwan University, his master's degree in 1970 from Oregon State University, and his Ph.D. in 1973 from University of Michigan. His dissertation, supervised by Joel Smoller, was titled, "Riemann problem for general 2 × 2 systems of conservation laws". After receiving his doctorate, Liu was a professor at University of Maryland, from 1988 at New York University and from 1990 at Stanford University, where he is now retired.
