Tomnashia
''Tomnashia'' is a genus of lichen-forming fungi in the family Teloschistaceae. It has four species of saxicolous (rock-dwelling), crustose lichens that occur in southwestern North America. Taxonomy ''Tomnashia'' was circumscribed in 2017 by lichenologists Sergey Kondratyuk and Jae-Seoun Hur, who bestowed upon the taxon an eponym in honour of Thomas Hawkes Nash III, a significant contributor to lichenology, especially concerning North American lichen flora. The type species of this genus is '' Tomnashia rosei'', which was originally described as ''Caloplaca rosei'' by Hermann Edward Hasse in 1911. Through combined phylogenetic analysis, it was determined that ''Tomnashia'' resides in the outermost position among monophyletic groups of the ''Polycauliona'' subclade of the subfamily Xanthorioideae. ''Tomnashia luteominia'', the red firedot lichen, is a species of saxicolous (rock-dwelling), crustose lichen in the family Teloschistaceae. It is widely distributed along the North American west coast. The lichen has two varieties: var. ''bolanderi'' has distinctive red apothecia (fruiting bodies), while var. ''luteominia'' has orange-brown apothecia. Taxonomy The lichen was first formally described as a new species in 1866 by the American lichenologist Edward Tuckerman, as ''Placodium luteominimum''. Thomas Hawkes Nash III
Thomas Hawkes Nash III (born November 13, 1945) is an American lichenologist. His research is about the biology and ecology of lichens, and the effects of air pollution on plants and lichens. He is known as an authority on the family Parmeliaceae. During his long career at the Arizona State University, he helped develop the lichen herbarium into a world-class collection with over 100,000 specimens representing more than 5000 species. In 2010, the year of his retirement, he was awarded the Acharius Medal for lifetime achievements in lichenology, and the following year had a ''Festschrift'' published in his honor. Teloschistaceae
The Teloschistaceae are a large family (biology), family of mostly lichen-forming fungi belonging to the class (taxonomy), class Lecanoromycetes in the division (botany), division Ascomycota. The family has a cosmopolitan distribution, although its members occur predominantly in temperate climate, temperate regions. Most members are lichens that either saxicolous lichen, live on rock or corticolous lichen, on bark, but about 40 species are lichenicolous fungus, lichenicolousmeaning they are non-lichenised fungi that live on other lichens.
