Tommy Hamilton
Tommy Hamilton (born 1935) is an Irish former footballer who played as a forward. He was educated at Synge Street CBS in Dublin. His first club was Manchester United whom he joined in 1953 where he began playing as an inside forward for the third team and reserves. Hamilton had played for Johnville, where he was trained and scouted by Jem Kennedy who sent him to Manchester United. However, Hamilton was not prepared for being conscripted so he came home to sign for Shamrock Rovers in November 1955 and made his debut against Waterford at Kilcohan Park on 6 November in a League of Ireland Shield match. The following season he was the League's top scorer. Hamilton scored twice for Rovers in the European Champion Clubs' Cup. After scoring at OGC Nice he was ruled out of the home leg due to tonsillitis. He played three times in Europe for the Hoops. Top Four Cup
The Top Four Cup was an association football super cup featuring the top four clubs in the League of Ireland. It was first held in 1955–56 and last played for in 1973–74. It was played at the end of the season. Shamrock Rovers were the inaugural winners and subsequently featured in seven finals. Waterford won the competition the most times, five times in total. The competition was sponsored by the ''Irish Independent'' and a result was also known as the Independent Cup. The cup was last won by Cork Celtic and is currently on display in the Evergreen Bar in Turners Cross, Cork. During the late 1960s the (Northern) Irish Football League also organised a Top Four Cup. Dublin City Cup
The Dublin City Cup is a defunct Irish football tournament which was played for by all League of Ireland sides (and not just those from Dublin city as the name suggests). It ran from 1933 and ran uninterrupted until 1973. In the 1975–76 season it was revived and played for by sides who did not reach the League of Ireland Cup quarter-finals. In 1983–84 it was revived again but only eight teams were invited to play, the six Dublin sides (Bohemians, Shamrock Rovers, Shelbourne, St Patrick's Athletic, UCD and Home Farm) along with Drogheda United and Dundalk. Leinster Senior Cup (football)
The Leinster Senior Cup is an association football cup competition organized by the Leinster Football Association. It is currently contested by LFA affiliated League of Ireland clubs, Leinster Senior League Senior Division clubs and invited teams from the various LFA affiliated junior leagues. Shamrock Rovers Football Club is an Irish professional Association football, football club based in Tallaght, South Dublin. The club's senior team competes in the League of Ireland Premier Division and it is List of football clubs by competitive honours won, the most successful club in the Republic of Ireland football league system, Republic of Ireland. Jackie Mooney
Jackie Mooney (1938 – 30 December 2017) was an Irish soccer player during the 1960s and 1970s. Mooney played for Shamrock Rovers, Athlone Town and Bohemians amongst others during his career in the League of Ireland. Club career Jackie was spotted playing for Home Farm by Billy Behan in 1955 and joined Manchester United. After 3 years at the club however, Mooney left Old Trafford without making the breakthrough. He had short spells at Bangor City and Cork Hibernians before signing for Shamrock Rovers where he made a scoring debut, against Shels in Dalymount Park on 22 August 1962. He scored for Rovers in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup against Valencia C.F. in the Estadio Mestalla in 1963. Cork Hibernians
Cork Hibernians F.C. was an Irish football club based in Cork. They played in the League of Ireland between 1957 and 1976 and, from 1962, played their home games at Flower Lodge. In 1971, they were League of Ireland champions. The club was dissolved in 1977 due to financial trouble. History The club was originally formed by members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and had previously played as AOH in the Cork Athletic Union League. Under this name the club won the FAI Intermediate Cup in 1952 and were runners-up in the same competition in 1957. 1957 also saw them change their name, turn semi-professional and join the League of Ireland, replacing Cork Athletic. Maxie McCann
James "Maxie" McCann (4 March 1934 – 16 November 2017) was an Irish soccer player from Dublin. McCann joined Shamrock Rovers in 1954 and made his debut on 10 April in a 2–0 win against Bohemians at Dalymount Park having signed the previous week. He scored a hat-trick in his second senior game. He played for Shamrock Rovers as a winger. He played in European competition for the Milltown club, scoring in a 3–2 defeat for Rovers against Manchester United in a 1957 European Cup preliminary round tie at Old Trafford. This goal was the first ever scored in European competition by a player representing an Irish club. In total he made two appearances for Rovers in Europe and scored 46 League and 7 FAI Cup goals during his time at Glenmalure Park.
