Tommy Cullen
Thomas Cullen (1939 – 5 October 2020) was an Irish Gaelic footballer. At club level he had some success with Edenderry and was a two-time Leinster Championship winner with the Offaly senior football team. Playing career Cullen played club football with Edenderry. He began his inter-county career as a dual player with the Offaly minor teams that contested provincial finals in both hurling and Gaelic football in 1957. He was called up to the Offaly senior football panel during the 1957-58 National League and made his championship debut in the 1958 Leinster Championship. Cullen played a role in the Offaly breakthrough, claiming back-to-back Leinster Championships in the 1960 championship and 1961 competition before losing out to Down in the 1961 All-Ireland final. He continued to line out for Offaly until June 1968 and in total he represented the team on 58 occasions, 23 times in the championship and 35 times in the league. Edenderry GAA
Edenderry GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Edenderry, County Offaly, Ireland. It participates in competitions organised by the Offaly GAA county board. The club fields both Gaelic football and hurling teams. Paul O'Kelly, who was a selector under Tommy Lyons when the Offaly county team won the 1997 Leinster Senior Football Championship and the 1997–98 National Football League, is from the Edenderry club. O'Kelly later served as manager of the county team himself. 1960 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship
The 1960 All-Ireland Football Championship was the 74th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county Gaelic football tournament. The championship began on 1 May 1960 and ended on 25 September 1960. Fermanagh back in the Ulster championship for the first time since 1948. Kerry entered the championship as the defending champions. On 25 September 1960, Down won the championship following a 2–10 to 0–8 defeat of Kerry in the All-Ireland final. This was their first All-Ireland title. Down's James McCartan Sr. was the choice for Texaco Footballer of the Year. Edenderry Hurlers
Edenderry (; ) is a town in east County Offaly, Ireland. It is near the borders with Counties Kildare, Meath and Westmeath. The Grand Canal runs along the south of Edenderry, through the Bog of Allen, and there is a short spur to the town centre. The R401 road from Kinnegad to the north and the R402 from Enfield to the east meet at the northeastern end of the Main Street. At the Grand Canal they split, with the R402 continuing westwards towards Tullamore and the R401 heads south to Rathangan and Kildare Town. History In the 16th century, Edenderry was known as Coolestown, after the family of Cooley or Cowley, who had a castle here. Offaly Intermediate Hurling Championship
The Offaly Intermediate Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested by mid-tier Offaly GAA clubs. The Offaly County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1929. The national media covers the competition. Shamrocks are the title holders (2022) defeating Seir Kieran in the Final, after a replay. History The intermediate championship dates back to 1929. It was the third hurling championship to be established in Ofaly, and was seen as a stepping stone between the senior and junior hurling championships. Over the years the championship proved difficult to sustain. There were no finals in 1940 and 1941, while the 1949 decider was declared void. 1961 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final
The 1961 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final was the 74th All-Ireland Final and the deciding match of the 1961 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, an inter-county Gaelic football tournament for the top teams in Ireland. A crowd of 90,556 (a record at the old Croke Park) watched the match between Down and Offaly. Match The biggest crowd ever to attend Croke Park saw an explosive opening to the match - Offaly's Mick Casey and Peter Daly got goals to put them six points ahead with the match barely begun. Down recovered with three goals by half-time, and led by two points with minutes to go. Har Donnelly had a 21-yard free for Offaly, and took a point when a goal was really needed. Legacy This was Down's second appearance in an All-Ireland final, and their second win from two. Down GAA
The Down County Board ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Coiste Chontae An Dún) or Down GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) in Ireland, and is responsible for the administration of Gaelic games in County Down, Northern Ireland. The County Board is responsible for preparing the Down county teams in the various Gaelic sporting codes; football, hurling, camogie and handball. The county football team was the second from the province of Ulster to win an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC), following Cavan, and also the first team from Northern Ireland to win the Sam Maguire Cup since partition, doing so in 1960.
