Tommy Crilly
Thomas Crilly (20 July 1895 – 18 January 1960) was an English professional footballer who played in The Football League for Hartlepools United, Derby County, Crystal Palace, Northampton Town. He also played for Stockton and Scunthorpe & Lindsey United. Playing career Crilly was born in Stockton-on-Tees, England and began his playing career with local team Stockton F.C., before signing for Hartlepools United (then playing in the North Eastern League) in 1919. He was ever present in his first two seasons and missed only one game when Hartlepools were elected to the Third Division North in 1921–22. In 1922, Crilly and teammate Harry Thoms moved, along with manager Cecil Potter, to Derby County. He made over 200 appearances, in total, for Derby and helped the club achieve promotion to the First Division, before moving to Crystal Palace in 1928 (again at the same time as Thoms). Stockton-on-Tees
Stockton-on-Tees is a market town in County Durham, England, with a population of 84,815 at the 2021 UK census. It gives its name to and is the largest settlement in the wider Borough of Stockton-on-Tees. It is part of Teesside and the Tees Valley, on the northern bank of the River Tees. The River Tees was straightened in the early 19th century, so that larger ships could access the town. The ports have since relocated closer to the North Sea, and ships are no longer able to sail from the sea to the town. This is due to the building of the Tees Barrage, which was installed to manage tidal flooding. The Stockton and Darlington Railway served the port during the early part of the Industrial Revolution. The railway was also the world's first permanent steam-powered passenger railway. Cecil Potter
Cecil Bertram Potter (14 November 1888 – 17 October 1975) was an English professional football player and manager. Born in West Hoathly, West Sussex, he played for Melton, Ipswich Town and Norwich City. Potter served in World War I, and played for Tottenham Hostpur during this period. After a spell with Hull City. He began his managerial career as a player-manager for Hartlepools United in 1920 and led the club into its inaugural Football League season. He subsequently managed Derby County. He succeeded Herbert Chapman at Huddersfield Town and secured the club's third successive First Division title. He left the club in 1926, joining former club Norwich City of the Third Division South, remaining in this role until 1929. A player–coach (also playing coach, captain–coach, or player–manager) is a member of a sports team who simultaneously holds both playing and coaching duties. Player–coaches may be head coaches or assistant coaches, and they may make changes to the squad and also play on the team. Very few current major professional sports teams have head coaches who are also players, though it is common for senior players to take a role in managing more junior athletes. Football League Third Division South
The Third Division South of the Football League was a tier in the English football league system from 1921 to 1958. It ran in parallel with the Third Division North with clubs elected to the League or relegated from Division Two allocated to one or the other according to geographical position. Some clubs in the English Midlands shuttled between the Third Division South and the Third Division North according to the composition of the two leagues in any one season. This division was created in 1921 from the Third Division, formed one year earlier when the Football League absorbed the leading clubs from the Southern League.
