Tom Ongena
Tom Ongena (; born 20 September 1975) is a Belgian politician for the Open Vld born in Germany and has served as chairman of the party since 2023. Biography Ongena was born in Cologne, Germany in 1975 before moving to Belgium as a teenager. He obtained a law degree from the University of Antwerp and from 1998 to 2003 he worked as a researcher in international criminal law and criminal procedural law at the university. He was then a political director for Flemish minister Bart Somers and later an advisor to Minister of Asylum and Migration Maggie De Block in 2019. During the 2019 Belgian regional elections, he was elected in first place on the Open VLD's list to the Flemish Parliament for the Antwerp constituency and was delegated as a member of the Belgian Senate. In July 2023, he was appointed as temporary chairman of the Open VLD party at the recommendation of Alexander De Croo after Egbert Lachaert resigned as chairman a few days earlier. The Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats (, , Open Vld) is a Flemish liberal political party in Belgium. The party has been described as centre-right and has smaller factions within the party that have conservative liberal and social liberal views. The party is a member of the Liberal Group, Renew Europe, and Liberal International. The party was created in 1992 from the former bilingual Party for Freedom and Progress (PVV) and politicians from other parties after Belgium was reconstituted as a federal state based on language, with the French-speaking faction forming the Reformist Movement (MR) in Wallonia. Maggie Celine Louise De Block (; born 28 April 1962) is a Belgian politician of the Open VLD who has been chairing her party's group in the Chamber of Representatives since 2020. De Block served as Minister of Social Affairs and Health in the governments of Prime Ministers Charles Michel and Sophie Wilmès from 2014 until 2020. Following a reshuffle on 9 December 2018 to prevent the government's collapse, she additionally resumed responsibility for Asylum and Migration. Biography Lachaert was born in Ghent and is the son of Flemish politician Patrick Lachaert.
