Tom Kamara
Thomas Saah Kamara (1949 in Sodu, Lofa County, Liberia – June 8, 2012, in Brussels, Belgium) was a Liberian journalist. He was best known for advocating freedom of press and openly criticizing the regimes of Samuel Doe and Charles Taylor. Kamara founded the independent Liberian newspaper the ''New Democrat''. Due to political persecution in his home country, he spent eight years in exile in the Netherlands. Early life and education Kamara was a Kissi from the village Sodu, located in Lofa County in northwestern Liberia. He went to primary school in Lofa County and then attended William V.S. Tubman high school in Monrovia, where he was the first editor of the school's newspaper. He started his professional career as a reporter for the ''Liberian Star''. He was educated at the University of Liberia and went to the USA to study journalism at the University of Texas. Lofa County
Lofa is a county in the northernmost portion of Liberia. One of 15 counties that constitute the first-level of administrative division in the nation, it has nine districts. Voinjama serves as the capital with the area of the county measuring . As of the 2008 Census, it had a population of 276,863, making it the third most populous county in Liberia. Lofa's County Superintendent is William Tamba Kamba. The county is bordered by Bong County to the south and Gbarpolu County to the west. In March 2010, the Freeport of Monrovia became ISPS Compliant (with no conditions) and moved from Security Level 2 to Security Level 1 in July 2010. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (born Ellen Eugenia Johnson, 29 October 1938) is a Liberian politician who served as the 24th president of Liberia from 2006 to 2018. Sirleaf was the first elected female head of state in Africa. Sirleaf was born in Monrovia to a Gola father and Kru-German mother. She was educated at the College of West Africa. She completed her education in the United States, where she studied at Madison Business College and Harvard University. First Liberian Civil War
The First Liberian Civil War lasted from 1989 to 1997. President Samuel Doe had established a regime in 1980 but totalitarianism and corruption led to unpopularity and the withdrawal of support from the United States by the late 1980s. The National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL) led by Charles Taylor invaded Liberia from the Ivory Coast to overthrow Doe in December 1989 and gained control over most of the country within a year. Doe was captured and executed by the Independent National Patriotic Front of Liberia (INPFL), a splinter faction of the NPFL led by Prince Johnson, in September 1990. Bushrod Island
Bushrod Island is an island near Monrovia, Liberia surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Saint Paul River, the Mesurado River and Stockton Creek (a tidal channel that connects the two rivers).
