Tom Jolls
Tom Jolls (August 6, 1933 – June 7, 2023) was an American television personality best known for his 34-year tenure at WKBW-TV in Buffalo, New York. At WKBW, Jolls hosted "The Weather Outside" segments during ''Eyewitness News'', performed many of the station's voiceovers, and served as host of the children's television show, the Commander Tom Show. Biography Tom Jolls was born in Newfane, New York, and grew up in Lockport, New York, where he worked at WUSJ from 1951 to 1962. His first television experience came as a personality at the short-lived WBES-TV during its three months in operation in 1953. He moved to Buffalo, working for WBEN (AM)/ TV, and in 1965 was effectively traded to WKBW-TV in exchange for Stan Barron. At WKBW, Jolls became the station's evening news weatherman, and before the end of the year, he was also hosting The Superman Show—interstitial segments. Commander Tom Show
The ''Commander Tom Show'' was a children's television series that aired weekday afternoons on Channel 7 WKBW-TV in Buffalo, New York, premiering on December 20, 1965. The host of the show was Tom Jolls, who had joined WKBW as a weatherman earlier in 1965. ''Commander Tom'' had replaced ''The Jungle Jay Nelson Show'', a jungle-themed program built around Tarzan films, which had aired in the early 1960s; Nelson was dissatisfied working in television and had used the popularity of his "Jungle Jay" persona in Canada to get work at CHUM, Toronto's preeminent pop music station at the time. When the show launched, it consisted of interstitial segments with Jolls shown around episodes of the '' Adventures of Superman'', a TV series that ran from 1952 till 1958. Kevin O'Connell (American Broadcaster)
Kevin O'Connell (born October 3, 1948) is an American broadcast personality. Early life O'Connell was born in Buffalo, New York, and attended Buffalo State College. His father is George O'Connell, the City Comptroller who led to effort to save the Shea's Performing Arts Center after it had fallen prey to taxes. His sister is Mary Kate O'Connell, a stage actress and WBBZ-TV host. His son Kevin Jr. is a chef who has operated restaurants and food trucks in Buffalo and Los Angeles. Career O'Connell was chief weather anchor for WGRZ-TV, the NBC affiliate in Buffalo, New York, from the mid-1990s until 2018. ''Rocketship 7'' was a children's television series that aired weekday mornings on WKBW-TV in Buffalo, New York from 1962 to 1978 and from 1992 to 1993. ''Rocketship 7'' was created to promote the work of Bell Aircraft, Bell Aerospace, an aircraft manufacturer in Wheatfield, New York, Wheatfield, and featured a Space Age theme popular at the time and an explicitly educational format, decades before it was E/I, made mandatory. The host of the show was Dave Roberts (broadcaster), Dave Thomas, who had joined WKBW in 1961. Promo the Robot was the show's other main on-air character. ''Rocketship 7'' featured segments with Thomas and Promo along with cartoons and other short programs such as Davey and Goliath, and Gumby. Thomas left the station in 1978 to join WPVI in Philadelphia, where he assumed the name "Dave Roberts" (He remained at WPVI until his retirement in 2009). The blizzard of 1977 hit Western New York, Central NY, Northern NY, and Southern Ontario from January 28 to February 1 of that year. Daily peak wind gusts ranging from were recorded by the National Weather Service in Buffalo, with snowfall as high as recorded in areas, and the high winds blew this into drifts of . There were 23 total storm-related deaths in Western New York, with five more in northern New York. Certain pre-existing weather conditions exacerbated the blizzard's effects. November, December and January average temperatures were severely below normal. Michael E. Randall (born November 2, 1953) is an American actor, playwright, meteorologist and reporter from Buffalo, New York. He is best known within his native Western New York for his long run on WKBW-TV, where was an on-air personality for 40 years from 1983 to 2023 and was the chief meteorologist from 1999 to 2013, and outside Western New York for his stage shows. Television career Randall holds seals of approval from the National Weather Association (seal #9708542, which he has held since at least the early 1990s) and the American Meteorological Society (seal #1558, which he earned some time in the 2000s).
