Tom Jeffery (golfer)
Sir Thomas Baird Jeffery, Companion of the Order of the Bath, CB (born 11 February 1953) is a British retired civil servant who was Director General for Children, Young People and Families at the Department for Education. He served as Acting Permanent Secretary on several occasions, notably for three months from December 2011 to March 2012. Early life Jeffery, son of George Herbert Jeffery and Margaret (née Thornton), was educated at King's School, Canterbury, before going up to Jesus College, Cambridge. He graduated from University of Cambridge, Cambridge with the degree of Master of Arts, MA, before further attending the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies at the University of Birmingham. Career Jeffery joined the Civil Service in 1981 in the Department of Education and Science (UK), Department of Education and Science (DES) and was promoted up the grades. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by King George I of Great Britain, George I on 18 May 1725. Recipients of the Order are usually senior British Armed Forces, military officers or senior Civil Service (United Kingdom), civil servants, and the monarch awards it on the advice of His Majesty's Government. The name derives from an elaborate medieval ceremony for preparing a candidate to receive his knighthood, of which ritual bathing (as a symbol of Ritual purification, purification) was an element. Sir Christopher Stephen Wormald (born 30 October 1968) is a British civil servant serving as Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Civil Service since 2024.
