Tom Dobson (golfer)
Thomas Peter Dobson (26 December 1903 – 1 September 1968) was a Scottish professional golfer. He won the Scottish Amateur in 1925. As a professional he represented Scotland on many occasions in the 1930s. Early life Dobson was born in Gullane, East Lothian in late 1903. His father was a starter at the golf course there. Golf career Dobson was employed as a greenkeeper, and later a foreman greenkeeper, at Muirfield. Despite his employment he remained an amateur and in 1925 he won the Scottish Amateur, an event which had only started in 1922. He defeated John Caven at the 22nd hole in his semi-final and then beat Willis Mackenzie 3&2 in the final. Both Caven and Mackenzie had played in the 1922 and 1923 Walker Cup matches. Dobson turned professional late in 1925, becoming the professional at East Renfrewshire Golf Club at Newton Mearns, south-west of Glasgow. Gullane
Gullane ( or ) is a town on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth in East Lothian on the east coast of Scotland. There has been a church in the village since the ninth century. The ruins of the Old Church of St. Andrew built in the twelfth century can still be seen at the western entrance to the village; the church was abandoned after a series of sandstorms made it unusable, and Dirleton Parish Church took its place. Gullane Bents, the village's award-winning beach, is backed by large sand dunes that in recent years have become rather overgrown by invasive shrubs like sea-buckthorn. Gullane is part of the John Muir Way, a long-distance footpath along the coast between Musselburgh and Dunglass. Llandudno International Golf Trophy
The Llandudno International Golf Trophy was a professional team match play golf tournament that was played at the Maesdu Golf Club from 28 to 30 September 1938. The tournament was contested between England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. It was intended to be the first of a series of matches but the Second World War interrupted these plans and the contests were not restarted after the war. England won the tournament by winning all their three matches against the other teams. The Maesdu Golf Club joined with the local Llandudno council to stage the tournament with the idea of promoting tourism in the area. A Triangular Professional Tournament with a similar format but involving only Scotland, Ireland and Wales had been contested at Cawder Golf Club near Glasgow from 21 to 23 October 1937. The Triangular Professional Tournament was a professional team match play golf tournament that was played at the Cawder Golf Club from 21 to 23 October 1937. The Ireland–Scotland Professional Match was an annual men's professional golf competition between teams representing Ireland and Scotland. It was played from 1932 to 1936. The match was played on a single day with 10 players in each team who played 5 foursomes and 10 singles matches. The first match in 1932 was tied but Ireland won the next four contests. History The two countries played a match on 18 May 1907, just before the Irish Professional Championship. On that occasion the Scottish team was weak and Ireland won by 13 matches to 4. The 1932 match was played as a match between the Irish and Scottish PGA Associations which meant that Mark Seymour, an Englishman, played for Scotland, where he was resident, and Sydney Fairweather, a Scot who was the professional at Malone Golf Club, played for Ireland. England–Scotland Professional Match
The England–Scotland Professional Match was an annual men's professional golf competition between teams representing England and Scotland. It was played from 1903 to the start of World War I and was then revived in 1932 and played until the start of World War II. The match was played on a single day, generally a few days before the Open Championship. Except on one occasion, there were 12 players in each team who played 12 singles matches and 6 foursomes. Scotland won the inaugural match in 1903 but didn't win another match, although three matches were tied. The event was organised by the PGA and only members of the PGA were eligible to play. 1927 Open Championship
The 1927 Open Championship was the 62nd Open Championship, held 13–15 July at the Old Course in St Andrews, Scotland. Amateur Bobby Jones successfully defended the title with a dominating six-stroke victory, the second of his three victories at the Open Championship. The regional qualification that had been used in 1926 was abandoned and the previous system of local qualifying just before the Open was reintroduced. Qualifying was held 11–12 July, Monday and Tuesday, with 18 holes on the Old Course and 18 holes on the New Course, and the top 100 and ties qualified. In heavy rain early that flooded the bunkers, Jones shot 76 on Monday at the Old and 71 on Tuesday at the New Course for 147, three strokes behind the low qualifier. Royal St George's Golf Club
The Royal St George's Golf Club located in Sandwich, Kent, England, is a golf club in the United Kingdom and one of the courses on The Open Championship rotation and is the only Open rota golf course to be located in South East England. It has hosted 15 Open championships, the first in 1894 when it became the first club outside Scotland to host the championship.
