Tom Carnaby
Thomas Easton Carnaby (25 December 1913 – 1971) was an English professional footballer who played as a half back for Southampton in the final season before the Second World War. Football career Carnaby was born in Newsham, near Blyth, Northumberland where he worked as a coal-miner at New Delaval Colliery, and played for the pit team, before joining Blyth Spartans in 1933. He helped Blyth Spartans win the North Eastern League title in 1935–36. In May 1938, he moved to the south coast to join Southampton of the Football League Second Division. Described as "a brawny centre-half", Carnaby was used as cover for David Affleck. Carnaby made his first-team debut when he replaced Affleck for the match at Tottenham Hotspur on Christmas Eve, 1938 (the day before his 25th birthday). Norman William Chalk (28 October 1916 – 2005) was an English professional footballer who played as a half back for Southampton in the period before the Second World War. Football career Chalk was born in the Bitterne area of Southampton and educated at the local Church of England School. He captained the Southampton Schools football team and gained schoolboy honours with Hampshire. He was signed by Southampton as an amateur in May 1937 and awarded a professional contract four months later. Ray Parkin (footballer)
Raymond Parkin (28 January 1911 – 18 July 1971) was an English professional footballer who played at inside right and later in his career at right half. He spent a large part of his career at Arsenal, where he played mainly in the reserves, and also appeared for Middlesbrough, before becoming a regular member of Southampton's Second Division side. Football career Parkin was born in Crook, County Durham and played his youth football at Esh Winning before joining Newcastle United as an amateur in October 1926. He made no first-team appearances for Newcastle and moved south to join First Division Arsenal in February 1928. His Arsenal debut came in a 5–1 defeat at Sunderland on 1 January 1929. David Affleck
David Roy Affleck (26 July 1912 – 11 August 1984) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as a centre-half for Clapton Orient and Southampton in the 1930s. Playing career Affleck was born in Coylton, Ayrshire, on 26 July 1912 and played Scottish junior football with Crosshouse Castle Rovers. He joined Notts County in July 1932 but made no first team appearances before moving on to Bristol City in May 1934. After a season with City he joined Clapton Orient in July 1935, where he spent two seasons in the Third Division South. Financial difficulties at Orient led to Affleck being sold to Southampton in May 1937, where he was recruited by Tom Parker as part of his drive to strengthen the team in an attempt to gain promotion from the Second Division, along with Frank Hill (from Blackpool), Billy Bevis (from Portsmouth) and Ray Parkin (from Middlesbrough).
