Thomas Barnes (Mississippi Politician)
Thomas A. Barnes was a state legislator in Mississippi. He served as Speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives during the first General Assembly held in Mississippi from October 6, 1817, to February 6, 1818. Barnes had previously been a member of the Legislative Council of the Mississippi Territory representing Clairborne County and was president of the council from 1809 to 1810, then again from 1812 to 1815. Thomas Barnes (11 May 1849 – 22 September 1873) was an English cricketer. Barnes was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm medium pace. He was born at Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. Barnes made his first-class debut for Richard Daft's XI against the United North of England Eleven at the Recreation Ground, Holbeck. He later made his debut for Nottinghamshire in first-class cricket against Surrey at Trent Bridge in 1872. He played four further first-class matches for the county, all of which came in 1872, with his final appearance coming against Gloucestershire at Clifton College. In his total of five first-class appearances for Nottinghamshire, he scored a total of 65 runs at an average of 10.83, with a high score of 33. With the ball, he took 2 wickets at a bowling average of 11.50, with best figures of 2/23. Thomas Barnes (1747–1810) was an England, English Unitarianism, Unitarian minister and educational reformer. Background He was the son of William Barnes, of Warrington. His mother was Elizabeth, daughter of the Rev. Thomas Blinston, of Wigan. He was born on 13 February 1747, and he lost his father when he was in his third year. He received his elementary education at Warrington grammar school, and later in the Warrington Academy. He was subsequently licensed as a preacher of the gospel, and became minister of the congregation at Cockey Moor (Ainsworth, near Bolton) in 1768. He remained there for eleven years. When he left, the numbers in attendance had trebled. Career In 1780 he became the minister of Cross Street Chapel at Manchester. It was at the time the largest, wealthiest, and most influential congregation of Dissenters in the town and district, and he remained there for thirty years until his death. Thomas Barnes (11 September 1785 – 7 May 1841) was an English journalist, essayist, and editor. He is best known for his work with ''The Times'' which he edited from 1817 until his death in 1841. Early life and education Barnes was the eldest son of John Barnes, a solicitor, and his wife Mary, ''née'' Anderson. After his mother's death, Barnes was raised by his grandmother before beginning his education at Christ's Hospital. When the school moved to Horsham in 1902 he had a boarding house named after him. While he was there he was a contemporary of Leigh Hunt and Thomas Mitchell, later a prominent academic. From there Barnes went up to Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he excelled both academically and athletically. While at Pembroke, Barnes studied classics, and he took his degree in 1808 as head of the senior optimes.
