Tokyo Hotel (Chicago)
The Tokyo Hotel, located at 19 E. Ohio Street, was a hotel in the Near North Side, Chicago, Near North Side of Chicago. Designed by architect Ralph C. Harris, it is 15 stories tall, and has 150 rooms. It opened in 1927 as the Devonshire Hotel. Before it closed in 2013, the Tokyo was not aimed at tourists, but rather flophouse, longer-term residents, and earned a reputation for being home to "prostitution and criminal activity." In October 2013 the hotel was sold for United States dollar, $13.5 Million to a real estate development firm. Following extensive renovation, the building reopened in June 2015 as the Freehand Chicago Hostel. Near North Side, Chicago
The Near North Side is the eighth of Chicago's 77 community areas. It is the northernmost of the three areas that constitute central Chicago, the others being the Loop and the Near South Side. The community area is located north and east of the Chicago River. To its east is Lake Michigan, and its northern boundary is the early 19th-century city limit of Chicago, North Avenue. In 2020 the Near North Side had 105,481 residents, surpassing Lake View as the largest Chicago community area by population. Flophouse
A flophouse (American English) or dosshouse (British English) is a place that offers very low-cost lodging, providing space to sleep and minimal amenities. Characteristics Historically, flophouses, or British "doss-houses", have been used for overnight lodging by those who needed the lowest cost alternative to staying with others, shelters, or sleeping outside.
