Tokolosh
In Nguni mythology, the tokoloshe, tikoloshe, tikolosh, tonkolosh, tonkolosi, tokolotshe, thokolosi, or hili is a dwarf-like water spirit. It is a mischievous and evil spirit that can become invisible by drinking water or swallowing a stone. Tokoloshes are called upon by malevolent people to cause trouble for others. At its least harmful, a tokoloshe can be used to scare children, but its power extends to causing illness or even the death of the victim. Protection against them includes traditional methods such as raising beds off the ground and interventions by spiritual figures like pastors with an apostolic calling or traditional healers (sangomas), who are seen to possess the power to banish them. The tokoloshe is often referenced satirically to critique the influence of superstitions on behaviour and society. Tokoloshe Man
"Tokoloshe Man" was a 1971 UK hit single by John Kongos, released on Fly Records. It stayed in the UK Singles Chart top 10 for five weeks, peaking at number 4. Kongos' previous single release was "He's Gonna Step on You Again", another number 4 UK chart hit. "Tokoloshe Man" was covered by Happy Mondays. It featured on the 1990 Elektra compilation album, ''Rubáiyát: Elektra's 40th Anniversary''. John Kongos
John Theodore Kongos (born 6 August 1945) is a South African singer and songwriter of Greek ancestry, best known for his 1971 Top 10 hit single " He's Gonna Step on You Again", on which Happy Mondays based their hit " Step On". His other big hit was "Tokoloshe Man", which was featured on the TV show ''Life on Mars'' and the CD soundtrack. His second album, ''Kongos'', made the top 30 of the UK Albums Chart; but his subsequent singles, "Great White Lady" (30th June 1972), "Higher than God's Hat" (29th June 1973)" and Ride the Lightning" (11th.April 1975) did not chart. Career Having had success in South Africa in the early 1960s with his band Johnny and the G-Men, as well as a solo artist, Kongos went to the UK in 1966, to pursue his musical career. Elifasi Msomi
Elifasi Msomi a.k.a. The Axe Killer (1910 – 10 February 1956) was a South African serial killer who was convicted in 1955 of 15 murders and sentenced to death by hanging. His victims all came from the Umkomaas and Umzimkulu valleys of Natal. Background A Zulu man, Msomi was an unsuccessful young sangoma (shaman). Seeking professional assistance, he consulted with another sangoma. Msomi claims that during this exchange he was co-opted by an evil spirit, a tokoloshe. In August 1953, under the instruction of the tokoloshe, Msomi began an 18-month killing spree in the southern KwaZulu-Natal valleys of South Africa. Crimes Msomi initially raped and murdered a young woman in the presence of his mistress, keeping her blood in a bottle. Saltrock
Saltrock Surfwear is a British surfwear company based in Devon. Created by brothers Ross and Angus Thomson in 1988, the idea was fostered in order to generate money to fund their passion of surfing. The brothers moved the company from Penzance, Cornwall, to Devon in 1992, after which surfer Carl Priscott joined the board. History Angus and Ross Thomson are two South African natives who decided to travel the world in the eighties and experience the best places to surf. They ended up in Cornwall after taking a train from London to check out the waves in Penzance. After spending most of their days on the beach and their nights in a pub they began to run low on cash and had to figure out a way to make money. ''Madam & Eve'' is a daily comic strip originating in South Africa. The strip, by Stephen Francis and Rico Schacherl, is syndicated in 13 publications and claims a daily readership of over 4 million people. The strip was first published in July 1992, in a black and white weekly format in ''The Weekly Mail'' (now the ''Mail & Guardian'') and in a monthly colour format in ''Living'' magazine. In 1993 the creators added five daily cartoons, also in black and white. In 2000 ''Madam & Eve'' was made into a television sitcom. ''Mad Dogs'' is a British psychological thriller television series, written and created by Cris Cole, that began airing on Sky1 on 10 February 2011, and ended on 29 December 2013 after four series and 14 episodes. Steven Jay Shelley (born June 23, 1962) is an American drummer. He is best known as the longtime drummer of the alternative rock band Sonic Youth, for whom he played from 1985 until their 2011 disbandment. Biography Shelley was born in Midland, Michigan, and played in several mid-Michigan bands, including Faith and Morals and Strange Fruit, and was among the original lineup of the punk band the Crucifucks. From 1985 to 2011, he performed with the noise rock band Sonic Youth, after replacing Bob Bert. Severian is the narrator and main character of Gene Wolfe's four-volume science fiction series ''The Book of the New Sun'', as well as its sequel, ''The Urth of the New Sun''. He is a Journeyman of the Seekers for Truth and Penitence (a Guild of torturers) who is exiled after showing mercy to one of his clients. Anchimayen
The Anchimayen (in the Mapudungun language, also spelled "Anchimallén" or "Anchimalguén" in Spanish) is a mythical creature in Mapuche mythology. Anchimayens are described as little creatures that take the form of small children, and can transform into flying fireballs that emit bright light. They are the servants of a kalku (a type of Mapuche sorcerer). According to some sources, the goddess she was originally conceived of as the moon goddess, married to the sun, but later developed into a (will-o'-the-wisp) type being that frightens and unhorses travelers.
