Titus Tobler
Titus Tobler (25 July 1806 – 21 January 1877) was a Swiss Oriental scholar. Biography Tobler was born on 25 July 1806 in Stein, Appenzell, Switzerland. He studied and practised medicine. Stein is a municipality in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden in Switzerland. History The municipality separated from Hundwil in 1749 and was named after the ''Uf Stein'' section of the neighbouring river. Geography Stein has an area, , of . Oriental studies is the academic field that studies Near Eastern and Far Eastern societies and cultures, languages, peoples, history and archaeology. In recent years, the subject has often been turned into the newer terms of Middle Eastern studies and Asian studies. Traditional Oriental studies in Europe is today generally focused on the discipline of Islamic studies, and the study of China, especially traditional China, is often called Sinology. Palestine (region)
Palestine ( el, Παλαιστίνη, ; la, Palaestina; ar, فلسطين, , , ; he, פלשתינה, ) is a geographic region in Western Asia. It is usually considered to include Israel and the State of Palestine (i.e. West Bank and Gaza Strip), though some definitions also include part of northwestern Jordan. The first written records to attest the name of the region were those of the Twentieth dynasty of Egypt, which used the term "Peleset" in reference to the neighboring people or land. In the 8th century, Assyrian inscriptions refer to the region of "Palashtu" or "Pilistu". In the Hellenistic period, these names were carried over into Greek, appearing in the Histories of Herodotus in the more recognizable form of "Palaistine".
