Tirsuli Group
Tirsuli is a Himalayan mountain peak in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, India. It is part of the complex of mountains, including Tirsuli West, Hardeol, Dunagiri, Changabang, and Kalanka, which make up the northeast wall of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary, in the Garhwal Himalaya. It rises at the northern end of the Johar Valley, which drains into the Gori Ganga. This peak should not be confused with nearby Trisul, which is on the southwest side of the Sanctuary. Kurt Boeck
Kurt Karl Alexander Oscar Boeck (10 June 1855 – 4 October 1933) was a German theater artist, and mountaineer who travelled across South Asia in the 1890s, photographed, and wrote on his experiences. Boeck was born in Antonienhütte where his father was a steel mill owner. He studied philosophy and science while also performing at the Berlin National Theater. He took part in a lead role in "Holbach" directed by Theodor Döring which was well received leading to his being offered a position by Bernhard Pollini. He however decided to return to try and complete his chemistry studies in Göttingen. He received a doctorate in 1879 for his thesis on disulfonic acid of anthracene. He then trained in acting under Karl Gustav Berndal and Heinrich Oberländer at the Dresden court theater. He grew in stature after the retirement of Carl Ferdinand Koberstein and became a teacher in the performing arts at the Royal Conservatory in Dresden in 1884. Johar Valley
Johar Valley (also known as ''Milam Valley'' or ''Gori Ganga Valley'') is a valley located in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, India, along the Gori Ganga river. The valley used to be a major trade route with Tibet. The best known villages in the valley are Martoli and Milam. Geography The alpine trans-humant village of Milam is located one kilometer below the snout of the Milam glacier. Here a left-bank stream called ''Gonka'' joins the Gori. The valley provides the approach route for access to peaks such as Nanda Devi East, Hardeol, Trishuli, Panchchuli and Nanda Kot. Joydeep Sircar
Joydeep Sircar (born 1947) is a mountaineer and mountain historian. In 1979, he published his ''Himalayan Handbook'', an index of all the-then named peaks of 6096 meters (20000 feet) and above in Afghanistan and the Indian subcontinent, giving chronological entries of expeditions up to 1975 to each peak with a brief summary of results and references to expedition reports, after a decade of solitary research. He was inspired in this formidable undertaking by the pronouncement of the late Soli S. Mehta, Hony. Local Secretary of The Himalayan Club, that the task had never been attempted before and was well-nigh impossible. This book, introduced by the famous British mountaineer-explorer J. O. M. Mohan Singh Kohli
Captain Mohan Singh Kohli (b. 11 December 1931 at Haripur) is an internationally renowned Indian mountaineer. An officer in the Indian Navy who joined the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, he led the 1965 Indian expedition which put nine men on the summit of Everest, a world record which lasted for 17 years. Affiliation Mohan Singh Kohli was President of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation from 1989 to 1993. Nanda Devi East
Nanda Devi East ( deva, नंदा देवी पूर्व), locally known as Sunanda Devi, is the lower of the two adjacent peaks of the highest mountain in Uttarakhand and second highest mountain in India; Nanda Devi is its higher twin peak. Trisul
Trisul is a group of three Himalayan mountain peaks of western Kumaun, Uttarakhand, with the highest (Trisul I) reaching 7120m. The three peaks resemble a trident - in Sanskrit, Trishula, trident, is the weapon of Shiva. The Trishul group forms the southwest corner of the ring of peaks enclosing the Nanda Devi Sanctuary, about west-southwest of Nanda Devi itself. The main peak, Trisul I, was the first peak over to have ever been climbed, in 1907. Description of the massif and neighbouring peaks The three peaks are named Trisul I, Trisul II, and Trisul III. Gori Ganga
Gori Ganga ( Kumaoni: ''Gori Gād'') is a river in the Munsiari tehsil of the Pithoragarh District, part of the state of Uttarakhand in northern India. Its principal source is the Milam Glacier, just northeast of Nanda Devi along with the Glaciers of the Ralam River, and the Pyunshani and Uttari & Dakshini Balati Glaciers that lie on the western face of the Panchachuli Peaks. Etymology In the local language "gori" means white or fair. "Gad" and "ganga" both mean river. The water of this river froths and contains white clay/sand, so it looks white most of the time.
