In Ancient Greece a ''thyrsus'' () or ''thyrsos'' (; ) was a wand or staff of giant fennel ('' Ferula communis'') covered with ivy vines and leaves, sometimes wound with '' taeniae'' and topped with a pine cone, artichoke, fennel, or by a bunch of vine-leaves and grapes or ivy-leaves and berries, carried during Hellenic festivals and religious ceremonies. The ''thyrsus'' is typically associated with the Greek god Dionysus (and his subsequent Roman equivalent Bacchus) as a symbol of prosperity, fertility, and hedonism. Religious and ceremonial use In Greek religion, the staff was carried by the devotees of Dionysus. Euripides wrote that honey dripped from the ''thyrsos'' staves that the Bacchic maenads carried. Saint Thyrsus
Saint Thyrsus or Thyrse (, literally "thyrsus"; Spanish and ; ; died 251) is venerated as a Christian martyr. He was killed for his faith in Apollonia, Phrygia, during the persecution of Decius, along with Leucius (Λεύκιος ''Leúkios'') and Callinicus (Καλλίνικος ''Kallínīkos).'' Tradition states that Thyrsus endured many tortures and was sentenced to be sawn in half. However, the saw did not penetrate as it became so heavy that the executioners could not use it. Saint Leucius, after reproaching the governor, Cumbricius, was hanged, harrowed on his sides, and then beheaded. Gabriel Téllez, O. de M. (24 March 158320 February 1648), also known as Tirso de Molina, was a Spanish Baroque dramatist and poet, as well as a Mercedarian friar, and Catholic priest. He is primarily known for writing '' The Trickster of Seville and the Stone Guest'', the play from which the character Don Juan originates.
