Tir National
The National shooting range (french: Tir national, nl, Nationale Schietbaan) was a firing range and military training complex of situated in the municipality of Schaerbeek in Brussels. During World Wars I and II the site was used for the executions of civilians, prisoners and captured members of the resistance. History The first range was started in 1859 by Charles Rogier (Belgian minister of defence) and the mayor of Schaerbeek (Eugene Dailly) at the Prince Baudouin barracks in the '. This first range was abandoned in 1886 by the government due to obsolescence. Modernisation of weapons meant that longer ranges were required. The shooting commission (''Commission du Tir'') decided to build a larger venue to permit members of the ''Garde Civique'' to practise over longer distances. Anton Winterink
Anton Winterink (5 November 1914 in Arnhem, 5 July 1944 in Brussels) was a Dutch Communist. and a member of the Communist Party of the Netherlands. Winterink was a core member of an anti-Nazi Soviet espionage group in Belgium that came to be known as the Red Orchestra by the Abwehr. He worked as a radio operator for the Soviet espionage group's that was associated with the Soviet GRU officer, Konstantin Jeffremov, in 1940. Winterink used the alias Tino to disguise his identity. In late 1940, Winterink established an espionage organisation based in Amsterdam, that became known as ''Group Hilda'' that operated until early 1943. Winterink was arrested on 18 August 1942 by the Sonderkommando Rote Kapelle in Amsterdam. After being interrogated and involved in an attempt at ''Funkspiel'', he was shot four months later at the ''Tir national'' military firing-range in Brussels. Attack On The Twentieth Convoy
On 19 April 1943, members of the Belgian Resistance stopped a Holocaust train and freed a number of Jews who were being transported to Auschwitz concentration camp from Mechelen transit camp in Belgium, on the twentieth convoy from the camp. In the aftermath of the attack, a number of others were able to jump from the train too. In all, 233 people managed to escape, of whom 118 ultimately survived. The remainder were either killed during the escape or were recaptured soon afterwards. The attack was unusual as an attempt by the resistance to free Jewish deportees and marks the only mass breakout by deportees on a Holocaust train.
