Bennettville, California
Bennettville (originally, Bennett City and Tioga) is a former settlement and ghost town in Mono County, California, Mono County, California. It was located on Mine Creek east-southeast of Mount Conness. History Mining began at the place in 1860. The first mine was renamed Tioga, when the Great Sierra Consolidated Mining Company bought it. By 1878, there were many mines in the Tioga district. The founders of the town envisioned 50,000 people living there. The Tioga post office operated from 1880 to 1881. The Bennettville post office operated from 1882 to 1884, that were Bennettville's growth era. The name honored Thomas Bennett, a mining company president. The mining company transported tons of equipment to the site and spent $300,000 developing the town, but no silver of consequence was produced. Bennettville was a ghost town by 1890. Tioga River (New Hampshire)
The Tioga River is a river located in the Lakes Region of central New Hampshire in the United States. It is a tributary of the Winnipesaukee River, part of the Merrimack River watershed. The Tioga River rises on the western slopes of the Belknap Mountains in Gilmanton, New Hampshire. Flowing west, the river quickly enters the town of Belmont, where it spends most of its existence. The river passes through Badger Pond shortly before reaching the village proper of Belmont, which was sited along the Tioga River in the 19th century for its waterpower. The river continues west, reaching a broad wetland along the Belmont- Northfield town line, and ends at the Winnipesaukee River near the outlet of Silver Lake. Tioga Pass is a mountain pass in the Sierra Nevada mountain range of California. State Route 120 runs through it, and serves as the eastern entry point for Yosemite National Park, at the Tioga Pass Entrance Station. Tioga Lake is a small glacial lake in the Inyo National Forest of Mono County, California, about two miles (3 km) north of the Tioga Pass entrance to Yosemite National Park. The lake bed is alongside State Route 120 in the Sierra Nevada of California. History Unlike most passes through the Sierra which are named for an individual, ''tioga'' is an Iroquois word, meaning "where it forks" or "swift current". Tioga County, New York, is the namesake for the lake. The area is believed to have been settled as early as 10,000 years ago by indigenous peoples. John Muir was among the first Americans to see the area. The next major interest came from the mining and logging industries.
