Tinus De Jongh
Martinus Johannes "Tinus" de Jongh (31 January 1885 in Amsterdam – 17 July 1942 in Bloemfontein) was one of South Africa's most popular painters. Career Self-taught, he began his career as a decorator in the Netherlands, and then pursued painting full-time. He achieved some note when the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam purchased one of his early pictures. He arrived in South Africa in 1921, practicing a sober style within the Dutch tradition, typified there by ''Still Life with Birds and Hare''. The light and landscape of South Africa soon caused him to abandon his muted palette in favour of more saturated colours. His formulaic approach to painting Cape landscapes with gabled farmhouses created such a demand that he abandoned his considered brushwork in favour of a broader palette knife technique. ''Viburnum tinus'', the laurustinus, laurustine or laurestine, is a species of flowering plant in the family Adoxaceae, native to the Mediterranean area of Europe and North Africa. ''Laurus'' signifies the leaves' similarities to bay laurel. Description It is a shrub (rarely a small tree) reaching tall and broad, with a dense, rounded crown. The leaves are evergreen, persisting 2–3 years, ovate to elliptic, borne in opposite pairs, 4–10 cm long and 2–4 cm broad, fine hairs persisting on the underside, with an entire margin. The flowers are small, white or light pink, produced from reddish-pink buds in dense cymes 5–10 cm diameter in the winter. The fragrant flowers (some consider the fragrance offensive, especially after rain when it is very strong) are bisexual (monoecious - having both male and female parts on one plant) and pentamerous. Martinus "Tinus" Bernardus Osendarp (21 May 1916 – 20 June 2002) was a Dutch sprint runner. Sporting career Osendarp was a football player and started training in sprint for fun. His first international success came at the 1934 European Championships where he won bronze medals in the 200 m and 4 × 100 m relay. He won another two bronze medals at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, in the 100 m and 200 m sprint events. The games were held in Nazi Germany and Osendarp gained some fame as the fastest white sprinter behind the black Americans. A possible third medal was lost when Osendarp dropped the baton in the final of the 4 × 100 m relay while fighting for second place. Contested on the second day of the games, drenching rain made the track soggy and slow for the running of the 100 meter dash semi-finals. Marthinus "Tinus" Linee (23 August 1969 – 3 November 2014) was a South African rugby player. Linee played predominantly at centre. He played all his provincial rugby for Western Province. He represented Western Province and the Stormers in Super Rugby. He played nine tour games for the Springboks between 1993 and 1994, but never played in a test for South Africa. Tinus du Plessis (born 20 May 1984 in Windhoek) is a Namibian rugby union player and a member of the Namibia national rugby union team. He is a back-row player who plays on both flanks and at number eight. Early life Du Plessis attended Windhoek High School in Windhoek and is a graduate from Stellenbosch University.
