Two Witches is a gothic rock band from Finland, formed in 1987. As with several other late 1980s bands (like Nosferatu (band), Nosferatu), Two Witches started basing the main part of their appearances and lyrics on vampiric imagery. The group was founded by Jyrki Witch and Anne Nurmi, who in 1993 left the band to start a professional relationship with Tilo Wolff and his group Lacrimosa (band), Lacrimosa. Their last work is the album ''Goodevil'', published in 2014. Gothic rock (also called goth rock or simply goth) is a style of rock music that emerged from post-punk in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. The first post-punk bands which shifted toward dark music with gothic overtones include Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, Bauhaus (band), Bauhaus, and the Cure. The genre itself was defined as a separate movement from post-punk. Gothic rock stood out due to its darker sound, with the use of primarily minor or bass chords, reverb, dark arrangements, or dramatic and melancholic melodies, having inspirations in gothic literature allied with themes such as sadness, nihilism, dark romanticism, tragedy, melancholy and morbidity. Darkwave
Dark wave, or darkwave, is a music genre that emerged from the new wave and post-punk movement of the late 1970s. Dark wave compositions are largely based on minor key tonality and introspective lyrics and have been perceived as being dark, romantic and bleak, with an undertone of sorrow. Common features include the use of chordophones such as electric and acoustic guitar, violin and piano, as well as electronic instruments such as synthesizer, sampler and drum machine. Lacrimosa (band)
Lacrimosa is a Swiss gothic metal band led by German musician Tilo Wolff, who is also the main composer, and Finn Anne Nurmi. They are currently based in Switzerland, but originally from Germany. Originally counted among the bands of the Neue Deutsche Todeskunst genre, Lacrimosa are most commonly associated with the gothic metal genre. Their musical style mixes gothic rock and heavy metal (music), heavy metal, along with violin, trumpet, and more classical music, classical instruments, although their musical development throughout the years has led to changes in instrumentation. Lacrimosa's lyrics are written almost exclusively in German, although since the 1995 album ''Inferno,'' every album has featured one or two songs in English. Anne Nurmi
Anne Marjanna Nurmi (born 22 August 1968) is a Finnish singer, composer and keyboard player who is a member of the band Lacrimosa. She lives in Switzerland. Nurmi was born in Tampere. In her youth she sang in church choirs and began playing keyboards. Nurmi is a contralto singer. In 1987, Nurmi and a singer named Jyrki started a gothic rock band called ''Noidat'' (). In 1989, two more members, Nauku and Toby, joined the band. The band then changed its name to ''Two Witches'' and started writing its lyrics in English. Nosferatu (band)
Nosferatu are an English second wave gothic rock band. As of 2025, the members are Damien DeVille (lead guitar),Tim Vic (vocals and guitar), Olde Bones (drums) and Smiffy (bass guitar). History Nosferatu were formed in March 1988 by guitarist Damien DeVille, bassist Vlad Janicek, and vocalist Sapphire Aurora. In 1990, they debuted with the track "Bloodlust" on a compilation album. Ex Grenadier Guard Gary Clarke ( The Cureheads) took over from Sapphire & fronted the band on their first Uk tour, opening for Every New Dead Ghost. Clarke left in late 1990 to start The Cureheads. Tilo Wolff
Tilo Wolff (born 10 July 1972) is a German musician and artist. He was born in Frankfurt am Main and currently lives in Switzerland. His longest-running project is the band Lacrimosa, which debuted in 1990. The band embraces a diverse range of gothic, darkwave and orchestral musical styles. Wolff composes, arranges, and writes the lyrics for almost all of Lacrimosa's songs. He also sings and plays piano for the songs and has contributed to the design of the album sleeves' designs. The same year Lacrimosa was founded, Wolff founded the independent record label, "Hall of Sermon" to finance Lacrimosa without being dependent on outside record companies. Hall of Sermon now has eight darkwave bands other than Lacrimosa on its books, including Dreams of Sanity and Girls Under Glass.
