Greater Manchester is a metropolitan county and combined authority area in North West England, with a population of 2.8 million; comprising ten metropolitan boroughs: Manchester, Salford, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan. Signal 1
Signal 1 is an Independent Local Radio station owned and operated by Bauer as part of the Hits Radio network. It broadcasts to Staffordshire and South Cheshire. As of September 2022, the station has a weekly audience of 172,000 listeners according to RAJAR. History ''Signal Radio'' began broadcasting at 6am on Monday 5 September 1983. The first voice on air was breakfast presenter John Evington and the first song played was ''Beautiful Noise'' by Neil Diamond. Originally, Signal Radio aired as a single full service station on 104.3 MHz and 1170 kHz (257 metres). The station's name was derived from ''Signal'', the local newspaper in the Five Town novels by Staffordshire writer Arnold Bennett. Signal began broadcasting to south Cheshire on 96.4 FM in 1989, before opening a new frequency for the Stafford area on 96.9 FM a year later. Kiss 105
Kiss 105 was a dance music radio station based in Leeds, West Yorkshire. It was part of a new breed of regional radio stations as opposed to independent local radio. History The station was launched at and the first track played was 'I Like It (Lisa Marie Vocal Experience)' by Angel Moraes. Its parent company, Faze FM won the Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Radio licence. Faze already operated Kiss 102 in Manchester. EMAP who owned London's Kiss 100 gave Faze permission to license the name. Later in 1997, both stations were sold to Chrysalis Radio who then rebranded the stations as Galaxy 105 as the brand licence required them to relinquish the name. Wigan
Wigan ( ) is a large town in Greater Manchester, England, on the River Douglas, Lancashire, River Douglas. The town is midway between the two cities of Manchester, to the south-east, and Liverpool, to the south-west. Bolton lies to the north-east and Warrington to the south. Wish FM was a local radio station serving Wigan in Greater Manchester and the St Helens area of Merseyside from studios in the Orrell area of Wigan. Following its sale to Bauer Radio, the station was closed and merged with the Greatest Hits Radio network in September 2020. Saddleworth is a civil parish of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham in Greater Manchester, England. It comprises several villages and hamlets as well as suburbs of Oldham on the west side of the Pennine hills. Kiss 102
Kiss 102 was a dance music radio station based in Manchester, England. History The frequency was originally issued to Sunset 102, Sunset 102 Radio - The Kickin FM but that suffered some financial problems. In May 1993, the Radio Authority made a decision to prematurely terminate Sunset's licence, apparently accusing the station of providing inaccurate information about its financial and management affairs. In August 1993 the station reportedly had its transmission facilities withdrawn by NTL for non-payment. Following a brief return to the air the liquidator was called in and Sunset's frequency finally fell silent. The liquidator was later to re-apply on behalf of Sunset Radio for its re-advertised licence. Faze FM won the re-advertised licence for Manchester. Manchester United Radio was a low power amplitude modulation (LPAM) community radio station owned by Manchester United F.C. which broadcast live match commentary, interviews, features and news relevant to travelling supporters within an area of approximately 50 miles around Old Trafford on matchdays between March 1994 and May 2008.
