Time Remembered
Time Remembered is a modal jazz standard composed by jazz pianist Bill Evans. Evans biographer Keith Shadwick says that it is "one of Evans's deeply-felt ballads, its strong melody arising from a very busy harmonic pattern, recalling music by Rachmaninov and Chopin." American jazz pianist Jack Reilly says that the work is influenced by both the sixteenth century modal works of the polyphonist masters (Palestrina, Byrd, Frescobaldi, etc.) and the works of impressionist composers (Debussy and Ravel). Recordings by Bill Evans It was recorded for the first time in 1962 with a quintet featuring Zoot Sims for the album '' Loose Blues'', which was released only posthumously in 1982. According to pianist Warren Bernhardt, though, Evans had said to him, "God, I hope they never release those tapes after I die!" Modal Jazz
Modal jazz is jazz that makes use of musical modes, often modulating among them to accompany the chords instead of relying on one tonal center used across the piece. Though exerting influence to the present, modal jazz was most popular in the 1950s and 1960s, as evidenced by the success of Miles Davis's 1958 composition "Milestones" and 1959 album '' Kind of Blue'', and John Coltrane's quartet from 1960 to 1965. Chick Corea
Armando Anthony "Chick" Corea (June 12, 1941 – February 9, 2021) was an American jazz pianist, composer, bandleader and occasional percussionist. John McLaughlin (born 4 January 1942), also known as Mahavishnu, is an English guitarist, bandleader, and composer. A pioneer of jazz fusion, his music combines elements of jazz with rock, world music, Classical music, Western classical music, flamenco, and blues. Fred Hersch
Fred Hersch (born October 21, 1955) is an American jazz pianist, composer, and a 17-time Grammy nominée. He was the first person to play weeklong engagements as a solo pianist at the Village Vanguard in New York City. He has recorded more than 75 of his jazz compositions. Early life Hersch was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Jewish parents. He began playing the piano at age four, under the tutelage of Jeanne Kirstein. He began composing music at eight, and won national piano competitions starting at the age of ten. Hersch first became interested in jazz while at Grinnell College in Iowa. He dropped out of school and started playing jazz in Cincinnati. The Kronos Quartet is an American string quartet based in San Francisco. It has been in existence with a rotating membership of musicians for 50 years. Oregon is an American jazz and world music group, formed in 1970 by Ralph Towner, Paul McCandless, Glen Moore, and Collin Walcott. History Towner and Moore had been friends and occasional collaborators since meeting in 1960 as students at the University of Oregon. Village Vanguard
The Village Vanguard is a jazz club at Seventh Avenue South in Greenwich Village, New York City. The club was opened on February 22, 1935, by Max Gordon. Originally, the club presented folk music and beat poetry, but it became primarily a jazz music venue in 1957. It has hosted many highly renowned jazz musicians since then, and today is the oldest operating jazz club in New York City. Marty Morell (born February 25, 1944) is a jazz drummer who was a member of the Bill Evans Trio for seven years—longer than any other drummer. Before joining Evans, he worked with the Al Cohn-Zoot Sims Quintet, Red Allen, Gary McFarland, Steve Kuhn, and Gábor Szabó.
