Tilting Weir
A tilting weir or tilting gate is a movable weir that is used for raising and lowering a Hydraulic head, head of water by controlling the flow of water to a lower catchment area or drainage basin. Typically the plate or paddle of the tilting weir moves up and down in a narrow duct by titling, pivoting, or rotating on its bottom horizontal axis, which opens or closes the tilting weir, thus controlling the flow of water out of the higher drainage basin. Construction There are beamed tilting weirs and beamless tilting weirs. Beamed tilting weirs have a strut, bar, or beam across the top of the tilting weir. Beamless tilting weirs are used where the watercourse could be subject to a significant volume of debris. Small boats and canoes are able to cross a beamless weir. Wrought Iron
Wrought iron is an iron alloy with a very low carbon content (less than 0.05%) in contrast to that of cast iron (2.1% to 4.5%), or 0.25 for low carbon "mild" steel. Wrought iron is manufactured by heating and melting high carbon cast iron in an open charcoal or coke hearth or furnace in a process known as puddling. The high temperatures cause the excess carbon to oxidise, the iron being stirred or puddled during the process in order to achieve this. As the carbon content reduces, the melting point of the iron increases, ultimately to a level which is higher than can be achieved by the hearth, hence the wrought iron is never fully molten and many impurities remain. The Marne (; ) is a river in France, an eastern tributary of the Seine in the area east and southeast of Paris. It is long. Lanark Hydro Electric Scheme
The Lanark Hydro Electric Scheme consists of two hydroelectric plants in the Clydesdale (district), Clydesdale area of South Lanarkshire, Scotland. They are run-of-the-river power stations, using water from the River Clyde near to the Falls of Clyde (waterfalls), Falls of Clyde. Louth Navigation
The Louth Navigation was a canalisation of the River Lud. It ran for from Louth in Lincolnshire, England, to Tetney Haven, at the mouth of the Humber. It was authorised by act of Parliament in 1763 and completed in 1770, under the supervision of the engineer John Grundy Jr. and then by James Hoggard. Eight locks were required to overcome the difference in altitude, six of which were constructed with sides consisting of four bays. The act did not provide the normal provisions for raising capital for the construction, as finance could only be obtained by leasing of the tolls.
