Tiller (horse)
Tiller (foaled 14 April 1974) was an American thoroughbred racehorse. Racing mainly on turf he won sixteen of his forty races between February 1977 and September 1980. He was not a champion, but won many important races and defeated many of the best racehorses of his era including Exceller and John Henry. He was unraced as a two-year-old and won three minor races as a three-year-old in 1977. In the following year he showed much-improved form, winning seven races including the Fort Marcy Handicap, Edgemere Handicap, Bowling Green Handicap and Tidal Handicap as well as finishing second in the Washington D C International. In 1979 he raced in California, winning the San Marcos Handicap and San Antonio Handicap on dirt and the San Juan Capistrano Handicap on turf. Herbager
Herbager (1956 – 25 March 1976) was a French Thoroughbred racehorse and an influential sire in both France and the United States. Background Herbager was sired by Vandale, a stayer who won the 1946 Prix du Conseil Municipal and whom Herbager helped make the 1959 Leading sire in France. His dam was Flagette (by Escamillo), who was inbred 2x2 to St. Leger winner Firdaussi, meaning both her parents were sired by him. During his racing career he was owned by Simone Del Duca and trained by Pierre Pelat. Racing career Herbager made two starts at age two, finishing second once and winning the Prix Seraphine. At age three, he was the best colt in his age group in France, winning important races including the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and the Classic French Derby in which he earned a Timeform rating of 136. Breeders' Cup Mile
The Breeders' Cup Mile is a Grade 1 Weight for Age stakes race for thoroughbred racehorses three years old and up, run on a grass course. It has been conducted annually as part of the Breeders' Cup World Championships since the event's inception in 1984. All Breeders' Cups to date have been held in the United States except for the 1996 event in Canada. The purse was raised from $1.5 million US to $2 million in 2007. Freddy Head has won this race twice as a jockey and three times as a trainer. There is no official stakes record for the Breeders' Cup Mile as it is run on different racecourses each year, some of which are significantly faster than others. Miss Grillo Stakes
The Miss Grillo Stakes is a Grade II American Thoroughbred horse race for two-year-olds filles over a distance of miles on the turf track scheduled annually in late September at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. The event currently offers a purse of $200,000. History The event was named for the Argentine bred filly Miss Grillo, a record breaking stakes winner in the 1940s who won the Diana Handicap twice. The event was inaugurated on 29 October 1980 at Aqueduct Racetrack and was run over the mile distance with Robert Kluener's Smilin' Sera winning the event by one length over De La Rose in a time of 1:51. De La Rose the following year would be crowned the US Champion Female Turf Horse. Hempstead Handicap
The Ogden Phipps Stakes is an American Grade I Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares, four years of age and older run over a distance of one and one-sixteenth miles on the dirt track held annually in mid June at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. History Inaugurated in 1961 as the Hempstead Handicap and was run at miles for both sexes. The event was not run again until 1970. It was raced under that name until 2002 when it was renamed in honor of prominent owner and breeder, Ogden Phipps (1908–2002). His horses won this race in 1988 and 1990. The race was run at 6 furlongs in 1970 and 1971; a miles from 1974 through 1994. It was hosted by Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, New York in 1973 and 1974. The event was upgraded to Grade I in 1984. Big Spruce
Big Spruce (1969–2001) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse. He was an outstanding middle to longer distance runner on both dirt and grass called "one of North America's leading runners in the early 1970s" by the '' Thoroughbred Times'' Background Big Spruce was bred by Maxwell H. Gluck at his Elmendorf Farm in Kentucky and trained for Gluck by Lefty Nickerson. Racing career Big Spruce won races in New York and California, including two Grade 1 events. As a three-year-old, he won the 1972 Lexington Handicap at Belmont Park then in 1973, he defeated future U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee Cougar II to win the San Luis Rey Handicap at Santa Anita Park and captured the first of his two consecutive editions of the Gallant Fox Handicap at Belmont Park. Grey Dawn II
Grey Dawn (1962–1991) was a French Thoroughbred Champion racehorse who was the only horse ever to beat Sea-Bird. Background Grey Dawn was bred and raced by American Gertrude Widener, a member by marriage of the prominent racing Widener family. She maintained homes and racing stables in New York City and Paris. Grey Dawn was trained by Etienne Pollet. Racing career In 1964, Grey Dawn defeated Sea-Bird in the Grand Critérium. He also won the Prix de la Salamandre and Prix Morny to earn French Champion Two-Year-Old Colt honors. Grand Prix De Saint-Cloud
The Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud is a Group 1 flat horse race in France open to thoroughbreds aged four years or older. It is run at Saint-Cloud over a distance of 2,400 metres (about 1½ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late June or early July. History The event was established in 1904, and it was originally called the Prix du Président de la République. It was initially contested at Maisons-Laffitte over 2,500 metres by horses aged three or older. It was abandoned throughout World War I, with no running from 1915 to 1918. The Prix du Jockey Club, sometimes referred to as the French Derby, is a Group 1 flat horse race in France open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is run at Chantilly over a distance of 2,100 metres (about 1 mile and 2½ furlongs) each year in early June. History The format of the race was inspired by the English Derby, and it was named in homage to the Jockey Club based at Newmarket in England. The Santa Anita Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in early March at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. It is a Grade I race for horses four years old and up and was once considered the most important race for older horses in North America during the winter racing season. Affirmed (February 21, 1975 – January 12, 2001) was a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who is the eleventh winner of the American Triple Crown. Affirmed was well known for his famous rivalry with Alydar, whom he met ten times, including coming second in each of the three 1978 Triple Crown races. After Affirmed won the Triple Crown, there was a 37-year wait until American Pharoah swept the series in 2015. Affirmed won fourteen Grade One stakes races over his career and was a champion each of the three years he raced.
