Tiago (horse)
Tiago (foaled March 8, 2004, died November 2015) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2007 Santa Anita Derby and Awesome Again Stakes. Background His sire was the 1992 U.S. Outstanding Older Male Horse, Pleasant Tap. His dam was the stakes winning mare Set Them Free, by Stop The Music, making him a half-brother to 2005 Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo. The colt was named after the son of singer Sergio Mendes, a longtime friend of the owners. Tiago and Giacomo are the same names, meaning James, the first being Portuguese and the second Italian. The two horses also shared the same racing silks. The title of American Champion Older Dirt Male Horse is an American Thoroughbred horse racing honor awarded annually to a stallion or gelding, four years old and up, for performances on dirt and main track racing surfaces. In 1971, it became part of the Eclipse Awards program as the award for Champion Older Male Horse. The award originated in 1936 when the ''Daily Racing Form'' (DRF) began naming an annual champion. In the same year, the Baltimore-based ''Turf and Sports Digest'' magazine instituted a similar award. Starting in 1950, the Thoroughbred Racing Associations (TRA) began naming its own champion. Belmont Park is a thoroughbred racing, thoroughbred horse racetrack in Elmont, New York, just east of New York City limits best known for hosting the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the American Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing (United States), Triple Crown. It was opened on May 4, 1905, and is one of the most well known racetracks in the United States. The original structure was demolished in 1963, and a second facility opened in 1968. Curlin (foaled March 25, 2004, in Kentucky) is an American Thoroughbred horse racing, racehorse who was the American Horse of the Year in both 2007 and 2008. He retired in 2008 as the highest North American money earner with over US$10.5 million accumulated. In the United States, the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, commonly known as the Triple Crown, is a series of horse races for three-year-old Thoroughbreds, consisting of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes. The three races were inaugurated in different years, the last being the Kentucky Derby in 1875.
