''Thysanichthys'' is a genus of marine ray-finned fishes belonging to the family Scorpaenidae, it is a monotypic genus with its only species being ''Thysanichthys crossotus''. This species is found in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. Taxonomy ''Thysanichthys'' was described as a genus in 1904 by the American ichthyologists David Starr Jordan and Edwin Chapin Starks when they described ''Thysanichthys crossotus'', giving its type locality as off Ose Point in Suruga Bay in Japan. In 1914 Jordan and William Francis Thompson described a second species, ''Thysanichthys evides'', but in 2010 this was shown to be a senior synonym of ''Scorpaenodes littoralis'' Tanaka, 1917 and was correctly classified within the genus ''Scorpaenodes'', confirming ''Thysanichthys'' as a monotypic genus. ''Scorpaenodes evides'', the cheekspot scorpionfish, little scorpionfish or shore scorpionfish, is a species of venomous marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Scorpaenidae, the scorpionfishes. This species is found in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Taxonomy ''Scorpaenodes evides'' was first formally described in 1914 as ''Thysanichthys evides'' by the American ichthyologists David Starr Jordan and William Francis Thompson with the type locality given as Misaki in Japan. ''Scorpaenodes'' is a widespread genus of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Scorpaenidae, the scorpionfishes. The fishes in this genus are found to the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Ocean. Taxonomy ''Scorpaenodes'' was first formally described as a genus in 1857 by the Dutch physician, herpetologist and ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker , Bleeker designated ''Scorpaena polylepsis'' as its type species by monotypy. He had originally described this species from Western Sumatra in 1851. ''S. polylepsis'' was later shown to be junior synonym of ''Scorpaena guamensis'' which had been described from Guam by Jean René Constant Quoy and Joseph Paul Gaimard in 1824 from Guam. Scorpaenini is a tribe of marine ray-finned fishes, one of two tribes in the subfamily Scorpaeninae. This tribe contains the "typical" or "true" scorpionfishes. The taxonomy of the scorpionfishes is in some flux, the 5th Edition of Fishes of the World treats this taxa as a tribe within the subfamily Scorpaeninae of the family Scorpaenidae within the order Scorpaeniformes, while other authorities treat it as a subfamily within a reduced family Scorpaenidae within the suborder Scorpaenoidei, or the superfamily Scorpaenoidea within the order Perciformes. David Starr Jordan
David Starr Jordan (January 19, 1851 – September 19, 1931) was the founding president of Stanford University, serving from 1891 to 1913. He was an ichthyologist during his research career. Prior to serving as president of Stanford University, he had served as president of Indiana University from 1884 to 1891. Starr was also a strong supporter of eugenics, and his published views expressed a fear of "race-degeneration" and asserted that cattle and human beings are "governed by the same laws of selection". He was an antimilitarist since he believed that war killed off the best members of the gene pool, and he initially opposed American involvement in World War I. A dorsal fin is a fin located on the back of most marine and freshwater vertebrates within various taxa of the animal kingdom.
