Thunder (British Comics)
''Thunder'' was a weekly British comics periodical published by Fleetway Publications from 17 October 1970 to 13 March 1971. A boys' adventure comic, the title only lasted for 22 editions before being merged with another Fleetway title, the long-established ''Lion''. Publishing history On 1 January 1969 International Publishing Corporation (IPC) merged Fleetway Publications and Odhams Press into a single division, IPC Magazines. This left them in charge of a large number of weekly comics aimed at younger readers, including seasoned titles such as ''Eagle'', ''Lion'' and ''Valiant''. The new company swiftly launched a spate of new titles - girls' comic ''Sally'' in June 1969; humour title '' Whizzer and Chips'' in October 1969; and the sports-themed ''Scorcher'' in January 1970. Rotherham ( ) is a market town in South Yorkshire, England. It lies at the confluence of the River Rother, South Yorkshire, River Rother, from which the town gets its name, and the River Don, Yorkshire, River Don. Rebellion Developments Limited is a British video game developer based in Oxford. Founded by Jason Kingsley (businessman), Jason and Chris Kingsley in December 1992, the company is best known for ''Sniper Elite'' and multiple games in the ''List of Alien, Predator and Alien vs. Predator games, Alien vs. Predator'' series. Barrie Tomlinson is a British former comics editor and writer. Career Tomlinson began his career at IPC Magazines in 1961, initially as a writer and then later as copyeditor on the comics ''Lion'' (1961–1967) and then ''Tiger'', becoming editor of the latter title in 1969. He later became the founding editor of the comics ''Roy of the Rovers'' (1976), ''Speed'' (1980), '' Scream!'' (1984), ''Wildcat'' (1988) and '' Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles'' (1990). ''Starlord'' was a British weekly boys' science fiction comic published by IPC Magazines from 13 May to 7 October 1978, when it merged with '' 2000 AD'' after 22 issues. The comic was created by Kelvin Gosnell, and was originally intended as a fortnightly sister title for ''2000 AD'' with higher production values and an older audience, but late changes in production saw it converted into a weekly. While ''Starlord'' lasted for less than six months before amalgamation, it had a lasting effect due to debuting the long-running strip "Strontium Dog", as well as "Ro-Busters", the fore-runner of "ABC Warriors". ''Tornado'' was a British weekly boys' adventure comic published by IPC Magazines from 24 March to 18 August 1979. The comic was partly created as a way to use up stories already commissioned for the other titles, and was marred by a difficult production. ''Tornado'' sold poorly and was merged with '' 2000 AD'' after 22 issues. Creation The cancellation of '' Valiant'' in 1976 and ''Action'' the following year had left IPC Magazines without a standard multi-genre boys' weekly. ''Jet'' was a weekly British comics periodical published by Fleetway Publications from 1 May to 25 September 1971. A boys' adventure comic, the title only lasted for 22 editions before being merged with another Fleetway title, the long-established '' Buster''. Publishing history While IPC Magazines' previous attempt to launch a new boys' comic, ''Thunder'', had been short-lived and merged with ''Lion'' earlier in 1971 the experiment had not been a complete waste; ''Thunders new features had proven popular with readers, and given the post-merger ''Lion'' a sales boost. Under group director Jack Le Grand, the decision was taken to try another weekly as a testbed for new stories, which could then be folded into an extant title should the new arrival not find an audience. ''The Beano'' (formerly ''The Beano Comic'') is a British anthology comic magazine created by Scottish publishing company DC Thomson. Its first issue was published on 30 July 1938, and it published its 4000th issue in August 2019.
