Three Counties System
The Three Counties System is a set of inter-connected limestone solutional cave systems spanning the borders of Cumbria, Lancashire and North Yorkshire in the north of England. The possibility of connecting a number of discrete cave systems in the area to create a single super-system that spans the county borders was first proposed by Dave Brook in 1968, and it was achieved in 2011. The system is currently over long, making it the longest in the UK and the thirtieth longest in the world, and there continues to be scope for considerably extending the system. Caving In The United Kingdom
Recreational caving in the United Kingdom dates back to the mid-19th century. The four major caving areas of the United Kingdom are North Yorkshire, South Wales, Derbyshire, and the Mendips. Minor areas include Devon, North Wales, and the Scottish Highlands. Caving grew in popularity in the 1950s and 60s through participation in caving clubs. This is a list of recreational caving fatalities in the United Kingdom. It includes all verified deaths associated with the exploration of natural caves and disused mines in the modern era (post 1880). Deaths involving members of the general public who may have slipped down a shaft, or wandered into a cave without being aware of the risks, have been excluded. Caving cannot be considered a particularly dangerous pastime. In 2018, there were up to 4,000 regular cavers in the UK, and about 70,000 people who went on instructor-led courses into caves in the Yorkshire Dales, but there were no fatalities. The Yorkshire Ramblers' Club (YRC) is the second-oldest mountaineering club in England, the oldest being the Alpine Club. Founded in 1892, the YRC is still a highly active club mountaineering and caving in the UK and all over the world. Ease Gill Caverns
The Ease Gill Cave System is the longest, and most complex cave system in Britain as of 2011, with around of passages, including connections only passable by cave diving. It spans the valley between Leck Fell and Casterton Fell. The water resurges into Leck Beck. The first-discovered entrance, Lancaster Hole, was found by George Cornes and Bill Taylor on 29 September 1946. A small draughting opening on Casterton Fell, Cumbria, opened immediately onto a shaft. Passages from the base of the shaft were explored over the succeeding weeks and months by members of the British Speleological Association, including Jim Eyre. The underground course of the Ease Gill (the local master cave) and high-level fossil passages above it were found and followed upstream to a series of complex inlet passages. Rumbling Hole is a cave on Leck Fell, in Lancashire, England. Its entrance is a deep fenced shaft, and it rapidly descends a series of pitches to a low aqueous passage that has been connected to Lost Johns' Cave. It is part of the Three Counties System, an cave system that spans the borders of Cumbria, Lancashire, and North Yorkshire. Long Drop Cave is a cave on Leck Fell, in Lancashire, England. It leads into Death's Head Hole, and is part of the Three Counties System, an cave system which spans the borders of Cumbria, Lancashire, and North Yorkshire. Description The entrance is below a small cliff in a shakehole. From the wide overhanging entrance, a short crawl leads onto an dry shaft. At the bottom, an excavated route leads into a narrow stream passage, with a narrow pitch a few metres downstream. Death's Head Hole is a cave on Leck Fell, in Lancashire, England. Its entrance is a deep shaft. It leads into Lost Johns' Cave and is part of the Three Counties System, an cave system which spans the borders of Cumbria, Lancashire, and North Yorkshire. Description The fenced entrance shaft descends some onto a loose boulder slope which leads to a second pitch of into the Main Chamber, a large chamber with a waterfall entering at the east end.
