Thornton-le-Beans
Thornton-le-Beans is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. It is on the A168 road and south of Northallerton. It is in the Thornton's electoral ward for district elections and the District Councillor is Bob Baker. The population of this electoral ward taken at the 2011 Census was 1,852. The village is currently in the Thirsk and Malton Parliamentary constituency, whose incumbent is Kevin Hollinrake. The village has one pub called ''The Crosby'' behind which there is a campsite. In 2007 the Pub won "Best Pub Grub" in the Flavours of Hambleton Awards. There is a Methodist Chapel at the east end of the village and a Chapel of Ease at the west end. The graveyard looks over the Vale of York. The author Bill Bryson famously stated in his book Notes From a Small Island that he wants to be buried in Thornton-le-Beans, due to the oddness of the name. Thornton-le-Beans Chapel
Thornton-le-Beans Chapel is in the village of Thornton-le-Beans, North Yorkshire, England. It is a redundant Anglican chapel of ease. The chapel is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. Since 2010 it has been under the care of the Friends of Friendless Churches. History The chapel was built in 1770, as a chapel of ease to St Andrew's Church, South Otterington, in the deanery of Mowbray, the archdeaconry of Cleveland, and the diocese of York. The font was donated by Dr Edward Pusey. The chapel was restored in 1886. It was declared redundant on 1 June 1997, and vested in the Friends of Friendless Churches in 2010. Architecture Constructed in stone with ashlar dressings, the chapel has a roof of Westmorland slate. It has s simple plan, consisting of a four-bay nave with a south porch, and a chancel. A168 Road
The A168 is a major road in North Yorkshire, England. It runs from Northallerton to Wetherby, acting as a local access road for the A1(M). History The majority of it was built during A1 upgrades as parts of it between Dishforth and Walshford are originally part of the old A1 southbound carriageway until it was upgraded to the A1(M) several feet to the west. The original route ran from Topcliffe to Northallerton, the current southern section of the A167. Route Heading northwards, it begins at the roundabout with the A659 (''Wattlesyke'' for Collingham) near junction 45 of the A1(M). This section of road was built when the A1 was improved to A1(M) in the Bramham to Wetherby section of the A1 Darrington to Dishforth scheme which was completed in December 2009. Hambleton District
Hambleton is a Non-metropolitan district, local government district in North Yorkshire, England. The administrative centre is Northallerton, and the district includes the outlying towns and villages of Bedale, Thirsk, Great Ayton, Stokesley, and Easingwold. North Yorkshire
North Yorkshire is the largest ceremonial county (lieutenancy area) in England, covering an area of . Northallerton
Northallerton ( ) is a market town and civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. It lies in the Vale of Mowbray and at the northern end of the Vale of York. It had a population of 16,832 in the 2011 census, an increase from 15,741 in 2001. It has served as the county town of the North Riding of Yorkshire and, since 1974, of North Yorkshire. Northallerton is made up of four wards: North, Broomfield, Romanby and Central. There has been a settlement at Northallerton since Roman times; however its growth in importance began in the 11th century when King William II gifted land to the Bishop of Durham. Kevin Paul Hollinrake (born 28 September 1963) is a British Conservative politician and businessman. He has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Thirsk and Malton since May 2015 and has been serving as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Enterprise, Markets and Small Business since October 2022.
