Thor Støre
Thor Støre (5 February 1924 – 7 May 2001) was a Norwegian politician for the Liberal Party. He served in the position of deputy representative to the Norwegian Parliament from Oslo during the term 1969–1973. Støre was a chess columnist for ''Dagbladet'' for many years. He was fired from ''Dagbladet'' in 1986 following a controversy over a column he had written commemorating the 1936 unofficial Chess Olympiad in Munich. For context, in the 1930s, Norwegian sports was still divided between the labour movement's organizations and the politically neutral (conservative) ones. The Workers Federation of Sports boycotted the whole Olympics, including the unofficial Chess Olympiad, whereas the Confederation of Sports athletes and chess players took part. Liberal Party (Norway)
The Liberal Party (, , V; ) is a social liberal political party in Norway. It was founded in 1884 and is the oldest political party in Norway. Despite its native name, the Liberal Party is positioned in the centre on the political spectrum, and usually cooperates much more with the right wing parties. It is a liberal party which has over the time enacted reforms such as parliamentarism, freedom of religion, universal suffrage, and state schooling. For most of the late 19th and early 20th century, it was Norway's largest and dominant political party, but in the postwar era it lost most of its support and became a relatively small party. The party has nevertheless participated in several centrist and centre-right government coalitions in the postwar era. Fischer–Spassky (1972 Match)
The World Chess Championship 1972 was a match for the World Chess Championship between challenger Bobby Fischer of the United States and defending champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union. The match took place in the Laugardalshöll in Reykjavík, Iceland, and has been dubbed the Match of the Century. Fischer became the first US-born player to win the world title. Fischer's win also ended, for a short time, 24 years of Soviet domination of the World Championship. Fischer won the right to challenge for the World Championship after some dominant performances during the qualification cycle, in which he defeated some of the world's leading players by unprecedented margins. The Storting ( ; ) is the supreme legislature of Norway, established in 1814 by the Constitution of Norway. It is located in Oslo.
