Thomas Thursby (d.1543)
Thomas Thursby (1487–1543) of Ashwicken was a notorious land encloser in Norfolk in the 1510s–1540s. Life He was the son of Thomas Thursby (d.1510), merchant, three times Mayor of King's Lynn and the founder and benefactor of Thoresby College. The great wealth inherited to him by his father enabled him to amass large tracts of arable land, which he then enclosed, turning out the landless peasants who had hereto lived there. It also meant a serious threat against their livelihood, the common ground previously having been available to grazing for the livestock of everyone. Thomas Thursby
Thomas Thursby (died 9 August 1510), was a merchant, three times Mayor of King's Lynn and the founder and benefactor of Thoresby College. He was the son of Henry Thursby, four times Mayor of Lynn and Burgess for Lynn, in turn son of John Thursby, Mayor of Lynn Regis 1425 and Deputy-Mayor 1435. Thomas' brother, Robert Thursby, was Burgess for Lynn 1462–3, 1482–3 and 1487, holding the manors of Ashwicken and Burg's Hall in Hillington before his death, 29 October 1500. In his will he leaves 'my special good Earl of Oxford, lord of Oxenford', John de Vere, 13th Earl of Oxford, a tabernacle of our Lady of gold. James Boleyn
Sir James Boleyn (died 1561) was a courtier in the reign of Henry VIII of England and chancellor of the household of his niece, Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII. He was thus the grand-uncle of Elizabeth I. James was the son of Sir William Boleyn and his wife, Margaret Butler. His eldest brother was Thomas Boleyn, 1st Earl of Wiltshire. Career He was knighted in 1520 for reasons unknown. In 1529, he sat for Norfolk in the Reformation parliament. He was a Knight of the Body by 1533. Elizabeth Grey, Viscountess Lisle
Elizabeth Grey, 5th Baroness Lisle (25 March 1505 – 1519) was an English noblewoman and heiress. Life Elizabeth was the daughter of John Grey, 2nd Viscount Lisle and Lady Muriel Howard. The death of her father in 1504 meant that she was born a considerable heiress and ward of the Crown. In 1509 her grandfather, Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk, obtained a lease of her lands from the king. After the death of her stepfather Sir Thomas Knyvet in August 1512 and of her mother a few months later, Elizabeth's wardship was purchased by Sir Charles Brandon, a favourite of Henry VIII. Betrothal to his eight-year-old ward facilitated Brandon's elevation to the peerage as Viscount Lisle in May 1513. Catherine Howard
Catherine Howard ( – 13 February 1542) was Queen of England from July 1540 until November 1541 as the fifth wife of King Henry VIII. She was the daughter of Lord Edmund Howard and Joyce Culpeper, a first cousin to Anne Boleyn (the second wife of Henry VIII), and the niece of Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk. Sir Edmund Knyvet (c. 1508 – 1 May 1551) was the eldest son of Thomas Knyvett (c. 1485 – 1512), a distinguished courtier and sea captain, and Muriel Howard (died 1512), the daughter of Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk. Elizabeth Tilney, Countess of Surrey (before 1445 – 4 April 1497) was an English heiress who became the first wife of Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk (when still Earl of Surrey). Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk (144321 May 1524), styled Earl of Surrey from 1483 to 1485 and again from 1489 to 1514, was an English people, English nobleman, soldier and statesman who served four monarchs. He was the eldest son of John Howard, 1st Duke of Norfolk, by his first wife, Catharina de Moleyns. Viscount Lisle
The title of Viscount Lisle has been created six times in the Peerage of England. The first creation, on 30 October 1451, was for John Talbot, 1st Baron Lisle. Upon the death of his son Thomas at the Battle of Nibley Green in 1470, the viscountcy became extinct and the barony abeyant. In 1475, the abeyance terminated in favour of Thomas' sister, Elizabeth Talbot, 3rd Baroness Lisle, wife of Edward Grey, 1st Viscount Lisle. Sir Edward was created Viscount Lisle on 28 June 1483, but the title became extinct on the death of their son John in 1504. The viscounty now passed to John's posthumous daughter Elizabeth, whose wardship was granted to Sir Charles Brandon. He contracted to marry her, and was created Viscount Lisle on 15 May 1513 in consequence. John Grey, 2nd Viscount Lisle (April 1480 – 9 September 1504) was an English peer of the Tudor period. Upon his death the title Viscount Lisle became extinct, but the Barony of Lisle passed to his unborn daughter Elizabeth, his only child. Sir Thomas Knyvett (also Knevitt or Knivet or Knevet), of Buckenham, Norfolk (c. 1485 – 10 August 1512) was a young English nobleman who was a close associate of King Henry VIII shortly after the monarch came to the throne.
