Thomas Taylor (microscopist)
Thomas Taylor (1820–1910) was a Scottish-American plant pathologist and microscopist. He was among the first to publish works on microscopic plant pathology with the USDA. Taylor was born in Perthshire, Scotland. He immigrated to the United States at the invitation of Abraham Lincoln in 1851. In 1871, he was hired by the USDA and became head of microscopy. He was often criticized for his lack of professional training, and his work was discredited and buried by his colleagues. However, his research into fungal diseases of fruit was later praised. Perthshire ( locally: ; gd, Siorrachd Pheairt), officially the County of Perth, is a historic county and registration county in central Scotland. Geographically it extends from Strathmore in the east, to the Pass of Drumochter in the north, Rannoch Moor and Ben Lui in the west, and Aberfoyle in the south; it borders the counties of Inverness-shire and Aberdeenshire to the north, Angus to the east, Fife, Kinross-shire, Clackmannanshire, Stirlingshire and Dunbartonshire to the south and Argyllshire to the west. Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln ( ; February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865) was an American lawyer, politician, and statesman who served as the 16th president of the United States from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. Lincoln led the nation through the American Civil War and succeeded in preserving the Union, abolishing slavery, bolstering the federal government, and modernizing the U.S. economy. Lincoln was born into poverty in a log cabin in Kentucky and was raised on the frontier, primarily in Indiana.
