Sir Thomas Rich, 1st Baronet
Sir Thomas Rich, 1st Baronet (c. 1601 – 15 October 1667) was an English merchant and politician who sat in the House of Commons in 1660. He established Sir Thomas Rich's School, a grammar school. Rich was born in Gloucester, son of Thomas Rich, an alderman of the city, and Anne, daughter of Thomas Machin, in 1601. He was sent to school in London and went on to study at the newly founded Wadham College, Oxford. Afterwards, he worked in the city of London in the wine importing trade. Rich later purchased the manor of Sonning, near Reading. In 1657 Rich was appointed High Sheriff of Berkshire and in 1660 elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Reading in the Convention Parliament. Admiral Sir Thomas Rich, 5th Baronet (c.1733 – 6 April 1803) was a British naval officer and Member of Parliament. He was born the eldest son of Sir William Rich, 4th Baronet of Sonning, Berkshire and his wife, Elizabeth Royall. He joined the British Royal Navy and was commissioned lieutenant on 25 March 1758. He succeeded as 5th Baronet on the death of his father on 17 July 1762. In 1763 he commissioned the 6-gun cutter for service in the English Channel until 1766. He was then promoted commander of the 14-gun sloop in March 1769 for service on the North America Station. This was followed by the command in North America of the 24-gun from February 1771 to 1773. In April 1775 he took command of the new 28-gun frigate and sailed to the Mediterranean Sea, where in March 1778 he captured the 16-gun American vessel ''Hope''. Ösel Tendzin (), born Thomas Frederick Rich Jr. (June 28, 1943 – August 25, 1990), was an American Tibetan Buddhist master and the principal student of Chögyam Trungpa. On August 22, 1976, Trungpa empowered Tendzin as his Vajra Regent and first Western lineage holder in the Karma Kagyu and Nyingma schools of Tibetan Buddhism. On August 25, 1990, Tendzin died of HIV/AIDS in San Francisco, California, aged 47. His wife, Lila Rich, and a group of his students continue to live in Ojai, California. Sir Thomas Rich's School is a grammar school with academy status for boys and girls in Longlevens, Gloucester, England, locally known as "Tommies". It is one of 7 grammar schools in Gloucestershire. Founded as the Blue Coat Hospital, it began to function in 1668, although being founded in 1666 by Sir Thomas Rich. The school moved to a new site outside the city centre in 1964. It offers a range of teaching and sporting facilities. History Foundation and Early Years The Will In Sir Thomas Rich's will of 1666 he left his Gloucester house, in Eastgate and £6,000 (a considerable sum for the time) for a school to be established for twenty poor boys in Gloucester.
