Thomas Prowse (MP)
Thomas William Lemuel Prowse (August 31, 1888 – November 2, 1973) was a businessman and was the 17th Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island from 1950 to 1958. The son of Lemuel Ezra Prowse and Frances J. Stanley, he was born and educated in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. He was proprietor and president of Prowse Brothers Ltd. in Charlottetown. Active in local politics, he was a councillor on Charlottetown City Council for eight years and served as the 26th mayor from 1930 to 1932. Named after Queen Charlotte, Charlottetown was an unincorporated town until it was incorporated as a city in 1855. The 1943 Prince Edward Island general election was held in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island on September 15, 1943. The governing Liberals of Premier J. Walter Jones lost seven seats to the Progressive Conservatives led by former Premier William J.P. MacMillan, but were able to retain a strong majority in the Legislature. Jones became Premier in May 1943 following the elevation of his predecessor Thane Campbell to the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island. This election featured the first appearance of the democratic socialist Co-operative Commonwealth Federation in provincial Island politics. Though they had formed an association in 1936, they did not run any candidates provincially until this election. The 1935 Prince Edward Island general election was held in the Canada, Canadian province of Prince Edward Island on 23 July 1935. The Prince Edward Island Liberal Party, Liberal Party led by Walter Lea swept the board by winning every seat in every constituency.
