Thomas P. Stratten
Thomas Price Stratten (born June 4, 1904) was a South African engineer. He went to University of Oxford, Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship, followed by two years at General Electric, American General Electric. He returned to South Africa in 1929 to the position of assistant electrical engineer at De Beers, De Beers Consolidated Mines. He took senior positions at Mittal Steel South Africa, Iscor, the Union Corporation and Eskom, Escom. After a time spent in the Directorate of War Supplies, he went on to successfully expand Sappi, SAPPI's operations and was president of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers during the 1940s. Kimberley, Northern Cape
Kimberley is the Capital city, capital and largest city of the Northern Cape province of South Africa. South African Reserve Bank
The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) is the central bank of South Africa. It was established in 1921 after Parliament passed an act, the "Currency and Bank Act of 10 August 1920", as a direct result of the abnormal monetary and financial conditions which World War I had brought. The SARB was only the fourth central bank established outside the United Kingdom and Europe, the others being the Federal Reserve, Bank of Japan and Bank of Java. The earliest suggestions for the establishment of the Central Bank in South Africa date back to 1879. A select committee, of ten members of Parliament, was established on 31 March 1920 to examine the benefits to the national interest of the establishing of the central bank. The Rand Club is a private members' club in Johannesburg, South Africa, founded in October 1887. The current (third) clubhouse was designed by architects Leck & Emley in 1902 and its construction completed in 1904. Cecil John Rhodes helped to select the location. Evander, Mpumalanga
Evander is a town in Mpumalanga, South Africa. It is approximately 8 km north west of Secunda. History The town was founded in 1955 when the Union Corporation started its mining activities and was originally part of the Bethal district (named after a town 36 km to the east). The town is named after Evelyn Anderson (1886-1972), the wife of Peter Maltitz Anderson, one of the directors of the corporation. Economy Gold mining The Union Corporation acquired options in the Kinross area, 64 km east of Springs. Mining started in 1955 though their subsidiary Winkelhaak Mines Ltd. The Evander mine is currently operating in its 9th shaft and employs around 3,300 people.
