Thomas Niles
Thomas Michael Tolliver Niles (September 22, 1939 – April 30, 2025) was an American diplomat who served as a career Foreign Service Officer and United States Ambassador to Canada (1985–89), the European Union (1989–91), and Greece (1993–97). He later served as President and Vice Chairman of the United States Council for International Business and was a member of the American Academy of Diplomacy. He graduated from Harvard University and the University of Kentucky. Niles joined the Foreign Service in 1962. His father was the American composer John Jacob Niles John Jacob Niles (April 28, 1892 – March 1, 1980) was an American composer, singer and collector of traditional ballads. The Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs is a position within the United States Department of State that leads the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs charged with implementing American foreign policy in Europe and Eurasia, and with advising the Under Secretary for Political Affairs on matters relating to diplomatic missions within that area. Originally, the Department of State first established a Division of Western European Affairs in 1909, which handled European states primarily bordering on the Atlantic Ocean and their colonies. The Division of Near Eastern Affairs handled relations with most Central, Eastern, and Southern European countries until after World War I. Edward Ney
Edward Noonan Ney (May 26, 1925 – January 8, 2014) was the chief executive officer of advertising agency Young & Rubicam from 1970 to 1986, and served as United States Ambassador to Canada from 1989 to 1992. Biography Early life Edward N. Ney was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota on May 26, 1925, the son of John J. Ney, a manager for American Standard Brands. He went to high school at the John Burroughs School in St. Louis, Missouri. He then attended Amherst College. During World War II, he served in the United States Naval Air Corps. After the war, he returned to Amherst and received his B.A. in 1946. In 1950, Ney married Suzanne Hayes and together the couple had three children, Nicholas (b. Feb. 12, 1953), Hillary (b. 1954), and Michelle (b. Dec. 9, 1955). In 1974 they divorced and he married Judy Lasky the same year.
