Thomas Lurz
Thomas Lurz (born 28 November 1979) is a German swimmer who specializes in long-distance freestyle swimming, especially open water swimming. Lurz lives in Gerbrunn and swims for the SV Würzburg 05 sports club. Biography He competed for Germany at the 2004 Summer Olympics in the 1500 m freestyle, where he missed the final, but returned to the 2008 Summer Olympics, where he won a bronze medal in the 10 km open water race. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he finished one place higher, claiming the silver medal. He was the world champion in the 10 km open-water swimming event in 2004, 2006 and 2009. From to 2005 to 2011, he won gold in the 5 km event seven times in a row. He was jointly awarded the inaugural Open Water Swimmer of the Year by ''Swimming World Magazine'' with Chip Peterson, winning following titles in 2006 and 2009 alone and 2011 together with Spyridon Gianniotis. Open Water Swimming
Open water swimming is a swimming discipline which takes place in outdoor bodies of water such as open oceans, lakes, and rivers. Competitive open water swimming is governed by the International Swimming Federation, World Aquatics (formerly known as FINA), except when it is part of multi-sport events, which are governed by the World Triathlon. In the first edition of the modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, the swimming competition was held in open water. In 2000, the Olympic Games first included a triathlon with a 1500 m swim leg, and in 2008, a Swimming at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's marathon 10 kilometre, 10 km open water swim. FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships
The FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships, or more commonly "Open Water Worlds", was a bi-annual FINA (now World Aquatics) championship for open water swimming held in even years from 2000 to 2010, inclusive. Race distances were 5, 10, and 25 kilometers (also known as 5K, 10K, and 25K). The 10 km race at the 2008 edition served as the main qualifying event for the Swimming at the 2008 Olympics, 2008 Olympics 10 km event.
