Thomas K. Gaisser
Thomas Korff Gaisser (March 12, 1940, Evansville, Indiana – February 20, 2022, Swarthmore, Pennsylvania) was a particle physicist, cosmic ray researcher, and a pioneer of astroparticle physics. He is known for his book ''Cosmic Rays and Particle Physics'' and the Gaisser–Hillas function. Biography Thomas K. Gaisser graduated in 1962 from Wabash College with a B.A. in physics. Supported by a Marshall Scholarship, Gaisser sailed in 1962 to England on RMS ''Queen Elizabeth''. Aboard ship, he met Julia Haig, who also held a Marshall Scholarship. In England the two studied at different universities, but their romance deepened when Gaisser wrote to her asking if she would like to see some plays in London during the academic holidays. They married in 1964 and, over decades, he pursued an academic career in physics, while she pursued an academic career in classics and eventually became a professor of Latin at Bryn Mawr College. Elisa Resconi (born 1 December 1971 in Brescia, Italy) is an Italian astroparticle physicist and the Chair of Experimental Physics with Cosmic Particles at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. Her research concentrates on high-energy neutrino astronomy and developing advanced detection technologies for cosmic particles. Cygnus X-3 is a high-mass X-ray binary ( HMXB), one of the stronger binary X-ray sources in the sky. It is often considered to be a microquasar, and it is believed to be a compact object in a binary system which is pulling in a stream of gas from an ordinary star companion. It is one of only two known HMXBs containing a Wolf–Rayet star. It is invisible visually, but can be observed at radio, infrared, X-ray, and gamma-ray wavelengths. Observations Cygnus X-3 is a prominent X-ray source, with soft and hard X-rays both varying in intensity. Periods where the hard X-rays are at minimum intensity are known as soft states. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory (or simply IceCube) is a neutrino observatory developed by the University of Wisconsin–Madison and constructed at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica. The project is a recognized CERN experiment (RE10). Its thousands of sensors are located under the Antarctic ice, distributed over a cubic kilometer. Antarctic Muon And Neutrino Detector Array
The Antarctic Muon And Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA) was a neutrino telescope that was located beneath the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station. In 2005, after nine years of operation, AMANDA became part of its successor project, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. AMANDA consisted of optical modules, each containing one photomultiplier tube, sunk in Antarctic ice cap at a depth of about 1500 to 1900 metres. In its latest development stage, known as AMANDA-II, AMANDA was made up of an array of 677 optical modules mounted on 19 separate strings that are spread out in a rough circle with a diameter of 200 metres.
