Thomas Gaugain
Thomas Gaugain (1756–1831) was a Stipple engraving, stipple-engraver. Life Gaugain was born at Abbeville in France in 1756 and moved to England with his family whilst still young. He studied engraving under Richard Houston. He began his artistic career as a painter, and exhibited in 1778 at the Royal Academy, showing ''A Moravian Peasant'', ''The Shepherdess of the Alps'', and a portrait. He continued to exhibit there up to 1782. He married his sister -in-law Mariane Ame Le Cointe on 17 June 1787. The union had issue of two sons and two daughters including Phillip Augustus Gaugain, a portrait painter. After 1779 he devoted himself principally to engraving, using the Stipple engraving, stipple method, and engraving some of his own designs. He showed four of these, printed in colours – ''Annette'', ''Lubin'', ''May-day'', and ''The Chimney Sweeper's Garland''– at the exhibition of the Free Society of Artists in 1783. William Taverner (artist)
William Taverner (1703 – 20 October 1772) was an English judge and amateur landscape artist. Life Taverner was the son of dramatist William Taverner (d. 1731) and was articled (in the legal sense) to his father (a judge) on 5 April 1720. Like his father, he became a procurator-general of the Arches Court - the ecclesiastical court of the province of Canterbury, based in London. He devoted his leisure time to art, and according to Redgrave,Redgrave, Samuel. A Dictionary of Artists of the English School' (G. Bell, 1878) p. 424. 'His drawings are chiefly in body colour, imitating the Italian masters, mostly woody scenes, and, though clever, do not by any means maintain the great reputation which he enjoyed in his own day.' Joseph Barney
Joseph Barney (1753 in Wolverhampton – 13 April 1832 in London), was a British painter and engraver. He is usually described as a pupil of Antonio Zucchi and Angelica Kauffman and as a fruit and flower painter to the George IV of the United Kingdom, Prince Regent. Two of his large-scale paintings — altarpieces ''The Deposition from the Cross'' (1781) and ''The Apparition of Our Lord to St Thomas'' (1784) are in Wolverhampton, and can be seen today at St John's Church, Wolverhampton, St John's church and at St Peter & St Paul's Roman Catholic church. During Barney's lifetime, his artistic achievements were respected and praised. In 1798, Stebbing Shaw, mentioning ''The Deposition from the Cross'' in his ''History of Staffordshire'', called Barney a "native genius" of Wolverhampton. George Morland
George Morland (26 June 176329 October 1804) was an English painter. His early work was influenced by Francis Wheatley, but after the 1790s he came into his own style. His best compositions focus on rustic scenes: farms and hunting; smugglers and gypsies; and rich, textured landscapes informed by Dutch Golden Age painting. Much of his work was intended for reproduction in prints, from which his publishers made a good deal more money than he did. Despite being a heavy drinker who enjoyed a rackety lifestyle, he was enormously prolific, though the quality of his work increasingly suffered. William Redmore Bigg
William Redmore Bigg ( Felsted, Essex 6 January 1755 – 6 February 1828 London) was a British painter. Bigg was born in Felsted in Essex to William and Grace Bigg. He enrolled in the Royal Academy schools in 1778 where he studied under Edward Penny (1714–1791) whose forte was depicting acts of charity. Bigg's greatest delight was in painting children. His first work in this genre to be exhibited in 1778 was ''Schoolboys giving Charity to a Blind Man''. A year later he painted a similar work, ''A Lady and her Children relieving a Distressed Cottager''. Apart from these his ''Palemon and Lavinia'', the ''Shipwrecked Sailor Boy'', and ''Youths relieving a Blind Man'' were very well received, and all were engraved. William Hamilton (painter)
William Hamilton (1751–1801) was an English painter and illustrator. Life Hamilton was born in Chelsea, London, but travelled and worked in Italy with Antonio Zucchi for several years. He trained first as an architectural draftsman, but soon moved to theatrical portraits and scenes from plays. Hamilton became an associate member of the Royal Academy from 1784, and was made a full member in 1789. Works Hamilton became very well known for his paintings depicting episodes from the plays of Shakespeare and for his illustrations of poems. Thomas Barker (painter)
Thomas Barker or Barker of Bath (1769 – 11 December 1847), was a British painter of landscape and rural life. Early life Barker was born in 1769, at Trosnant near the village of Pontypool, in Monmouthshire. His father, Benjamin Barker, was the son of a barrister, and practiced as an artist, but never attempted more than the portraits of horses. He eventually took up employment as a Japanware decorator. From an early age Barker showed a remarkable talent for drawing figures and designing landscapes, although he never took a lesson in either drawing or painting and was entirely self-taught. Joseph Nollekens R.A. (11 August 1737 – 23 April 1823) was a sculptor from London generally considered to be the finest British sculptor of the late 18th century. Life Nollekens was born on 11 August 1737 at 28 Dean Street, Soho, London, the son of the Flemish painter Josef Frans Nollekens (1702–1748) who had moved from Antwerp to London in 1733. He studied first under another Flemish immigrant in London, the sculptor Peter Scheemakers, before studying and working as an antiques dealer, restorer and copier in Rome from 1760 or 1762. Thomas Banks (sculptor)
Thomas Banks (29 December 1735 – 2 February 1805) was an important 18th-century English sculptor. Life The son of William Banks, a surveyor who was land steward to the Duke of Beaufort, he was born in London. He was educated at Ross-on-Wye. Banks was taught drawing by his father, and from 1750 to 1756 was apprenticed to a woodcarver, William Barlow, in London. In his spare time he worked at sculpture, spending his evenings in the studio of the Flemish émigré sculptor Peter Scheemakers. During this period he is known to have worked for the architect William Kent. Richard Westall
Richard Westall (2 January 1765 – 4 December 1836) was an English painter and illustrator of portraits, historical and literary events, best known for his portraits of Byron. He was also Queen Victoria's drawing master. Biography Westall was the more successful of two half-brothers (both sons of a Benjamin Westall, from Norwich) who both became painters. His younger half-brother was William Westall (1781–1850), a much-travelled landscape painter. Charles Benazech
Charles Benazech (1767/68 – 1794) was an English portrait and historical painter, and aquatint engraver. Prints of his painting of Louis XVI and family, just before the monarch's execution during the French Revolution, achieved a wide circulation. Life and work Benazach was born in London around 1767, the son of Peter Paul Benazech. In 1782, at the age of fifteen, he went to Rome, and on his return stayed for a time in Paris, where he studied under Greuze, and witnessed the outbreak of the French Revolution.
