Thomas Egan (gangster)
Thomas Egan (November 1, 1874 – April 20, 1919) was an American politician and organized crime figure involved in bootlegging and illegal gambling in St. Louis, Missouri. Egan was the namesake of the infamous Egan's Rats. The son of an Irish-American saloonkeeper, Egan was born and raised in Kerry Patch, then known as the riverfront Irish ghetto of St. Louis. With some of his childhood pals, he began running with a local gang of thugs, known as the Ashley Street Gang. Egan's best friend, Thomas "Snake" Kinney, was a local street tough and Democratic politician. During an ill-fated burglary attempt on October 17, 1894, Egan was shot through the face by a policeman. Tom survived but was left with an ugly scar on his jaw. Throughout the years, his stock in the gang climbed. Thomas Patrick Egan (born June 9, 1946) is an American former professional baseball player. He played in Major League Baseball as a catcher from through for the California Angels and the Chicago White Sox. On September 28, 1974, he caught Nolan Ryan's third no-hitter. Egan threw and batted right-handed, stood tall and weighed . Baseball career Born in Los Angeles, he attended El Rancho High School in Pico Rivera, California, and signed to a $100,000 bonus contract by the Angels in 1964. He was just 18 years old when he made his Major League debut on May 27, 1965. Before a crowd of only 1,898 in Washington, D.C., he was the last batter of the Angels' game against the Washington Senators, representing the tying run as the Angels trailed 9–6 with two men on base. Thomas Egan (physician)
Thomas Egan (1752–1818) was an 18th-century Irish physician. He was born in Dunblaney, parish of Dunmore in the Diocese of Tuam, County Galway. He came from an ancient Catholic family who were brehons (judges), and had a law school at their home, Park Castle, near Tuam. His uncle, Boetius Egan, was archbishop of Tuam. Showing unusual ability at an early age, he was tutored at home and sent to study medicine at Montpellier University from which he graduated with a doctorate in 1775; his thesis was entitled "De arthritide" (About Arthritis). He first practised medicine in Galway, where he married Sarah Gibbon, a choice that was not approved by his friends and led to their relocation to Dublin in about 1793. There he made an important contribution to the city's hospitals and to the establishment of St Patrick's College, Maynooth, where he was a professor. Thomas Selby Egan
Thomas Selby Egan (25 December 1814 – 11 May 1893) was a coxswain, a rowing coach, and a German scholar. As a coxswain for Cambridge University, he coxed the first Cambridge boat to win The Boat Race. Egan was born in London, the son of John Egan. He was admitted to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge on 29 June 1833. In his college days at Cambridge he was cox for the winning Cambridge boat in the Boat Races in 1836, 1839 and 1840 and was well known as an "aquatic coach". In 1841 and 1842 he coxed the Cambridge Subscription Rooms eight which won the Grand Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta. Egan was an umpire at Henley Regatta for 12 years and was an editor of ''Bell's Life in London'' for many years. Egan criticised the use of watermen as coaches, advocating the longer and smoother stroke of amateurs rather than the waterman's choppy stroke.
