Thomas Clausen (educator)
Thomas Greenwood Clausen (December 22, 1939 – February 20, 2002) was an educator from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, who was the last elected state superintendent of education, a position which he filled as a Democrat from 1984 to 1988 during the third administration of Governor Edwin Edwards. Background Clausen's mother, Leonell Wilkes Clausen, who died in 1999 was a native of Centerville in St. Mary Parish. She lived in Verdunville, also in St. Mary Parish, where Clausen was born, but she spent her later years in Baton Rouge. "Mama Nell" Clausen, as she was known, drove a school bus, delivered food to shut-ins, worked in a school for the handicapped, and was a justice of the peace in St. Mary Parish. Thomas Clausen (born 5 October 1949) is a Danish jazz pianist and composer. Early life Clausen was born on 5 October 1949 in Copenhagen. His brother was Bent Clausen. Thomas studied piano and composition. Later life and career Clausen was part of the band V8, led by Palle Mikkelborg and Alex Riel, from 1970 to 1975. He has recorded with Scandinavian jazz musicians and with Bob Brookmeyer, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Dexter Gordon, Jackie McLean, Ben Webster and others. He has also led groups throughout his career. Thomas Clausen (mathematician)
Thomas Clausen (16 January 1801, Snogbæk, Sottrup Municipality, Duchy of Schleswig (now Denmark) – 23 May 1885, Dorpat, Imperial Russia (now Estonia)) was a Danish mathematician and astronomer. Clausen learned mathematics at home. In 1820, he became a trainee at the Munich Optical Institute and in 1824, at the Altona Observatory after he showed Heinrich Christian Schumacher his paper on calculating longitude by the occultation of stars by the moon. He eventually returned to Munich, where he conceived and published his best known works on mathematics. In 1842 Clausen was hired by the staff of the Tartu Observatory, becoming its director in 1866-1872. Works by Clausen include studies on the stability of Solar System, comet movement, ABC telegraph code and calculation of 250 decimals of pi (later, only 248 were confirmed to be correct).
