Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its roots are in blues, ragtime, European harmony, African rhythmic rituals, spirituals, hymns, marches, vaudeville song, and dance music. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to different styles. New Orleans jazz began in the early 1910s, combining earlier brass band marches, French quadrilles, biguine, ragtime and blues with collective polyphonic improvisation. However, jazz did not begin as a single musical tradition in New Orleans or elsewhere. In the 1930s, arranged dance-oriented swing big bands, ...

Blue Note
Blue Note Records is an American jazz record label now owned by Universal Music Group and operated under Capitol Music Group. Established in 1939 by German-Jewish emigrants Alfred Lion and Max Margulis, it derived its name from the blue notes of jazz and the blues. Originally dedicated to recording traditional jazz and small group swing, the label began to switch its attention to modern jazz around 1947. From there, Blue Note grew to become one of the most prolific, influential and respected jazz labels of the mid-20th century, noted for its role in facilitating the development of hard bop, post-bop and avant-garde jazz, as well as for its iconic modernist art direction. History Historically, Blue Note has principally been associated with the " hard bop" style of jazz (mixing bebop with other forms of music including soul, blues, rhythm and blues and gospel), but also recorded essential albums in the avant-garde and free styles of jazz. Horace Silver, Jimmy Smith, Fredd ...

Shelf-Life (album)
''Shelf-Life'' is an album by the group Bedrock featuring keyboardist Uri Caine with bassist Tim Lefebvre and drummer Zach Danziger which was released on the Winter & Winter label in 2005.Uri Caine discography

Reception

correspondent Will Layman said "The sense of parody, exaggeration, and pastiche is dead-on brilliant, at least the first time you hear the disc... The small details of ''Shelf-Life'' are utterly worth revisiting. Each time it sounds a bit less jammy and more organized. But it repays the kind of listens it’s hard to give in life—long, hard, sustained listens. If you’ve got the time and the inclination, well—Uri Caine has just the album for you". ...

Uri Caine Ensemble Plays Mozart
''Uri Caine Ensemble Plays Mozart'' is a live album by pianist Uri Caine's Ensemble performing works written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart recorded in 2006 and released on the Winter & Winter label. It was recorded at the Amstel church in Amsterdam as part of the 60th Holland Festival. Reception In his review for Allmusic, Jonathan Widran said, "the album swings mercurially from mood, paying strict homage at times but also reminding the listener that centuries have passed and it's time for new twists on the sacred. One's enjoyment will depend solely on his or her passion for tradition, but overall, for the adventurous, ''Plays Mozart'' is worth at least one test spin". On ''All About Jazz'' Troy Collins said, "Working in klezmer and Dixieland variations, as well as free jazz, psychedelic rock and even subtle electronica, Caine can seem mighty irreverent to the old guard. But he also contributes pieces of unflagging beauty and tenderness, proving his point that all forms (from the sa ...

I Loves You Porgy
"I Loves You, Porgy" is a duet from the 1935 opera ''Porgy and Bess'' with music by George Gershwin and lyrics by Ira Gershwin. It was performed in the opera's premiere in 1935 and on Broadway the same year by Anne Brown and Todd Duncan. They recorded the song on volume 2 of the album ''Selections from George Gershwin's Folk Opera Porgy and Bess'' in 1942. The duet occurs in act 2, scene 3, Catfish Row, where Porgy promises Bess that he will protect her. Bess has a lover, Crown, who is abusive and continually seduces her. The song was popularised by Nina Simone's adaptation from her 1959 debut album, '' Little Girl Blue''. Analysis Lyrics In the lyrics, Bess is asking Porgy to stop her from going with Crown, her abusive lover. During the early stages of the opera ''Porgy and Bess'', Bess' opening stanza was cut out. The re-addition of this stanza into the opera proved crucial in demonstrating Bess' feelings towards Porgy and Crown, as well as showing the extent of Bess's self-un ...
