Thermopolium
In the ancient Greco-Roman world, a thermopolium (: thermopolia), from Greek (''thermopōlion''), i.e. cook-shop, literally "a place where something hot is sold", was a commercial establishment where it was possible to purchase ready-to-eat food. In Latin literature, they are also called '' popinae'', ''cauponae'', ''hospitia'' or ''stabula'', but archaeologists refer to them all as ''thermopolia''. They were mainly used by those who did not have their own kitchens, often inhabitants of '' insulae'', and this sometimes led to thermopolia being scorned by the upper class. Design A typical thermopolium consists of a small room attached to, but not accessible from, a house, with a distinctive masonry counter in the front. A ''taberna'' (: ''tabernae'') was a type of shop or stall in Ancient Rome. Originally meaning a single-room shop for the sale of goods and services, ''tabernae'' were often incorporated into domestic dwellings on the ground level flanking the fauces, the main entrance to a home, but with one side open to the street. As the Roman Empire became more prosperous, ''tabernae'' were established within great indoor markets and were often covered by a barrel vault. Each ''taberna'' within a market had a window above it to let light into a wooden attic for storage and had a wide doorway. The ''popina'' (: ''popinae'') was an ancient Roman wine bar, where a limited menu of simple foods (olives, bread, stews) and selection of wines of varying quality were available. The ''popina'' was a place for plebeians of the lower classes of Roman society (slaves, freedmen, foreigners) to socialize and in Roman literature they were frequently associated with illegal and immoral behavior. A dolium (plural: dolia) is a large earthenware vase or vessel used in ancient Roman times for the fermentation of alcoholic beverages, as well as storage or transportation of goods.
