The Theodore von Karman Medal in Engineering Mechanics is awarded annually to an individual in recognition of his distinguished achievement in engineering mechanics, applicable to any branch of civil engineering. Stanley Corrsin
Stanley Corrsin (3 April 1920 – 2 June 1986) was an American physicist, fluid dynamicist, and Theophilus Halley Smoot Professor of Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University. He was known for his contributions in the field of fluid dynamics in general and turbulence in particular. He was a recipient of Fluid Dynamics Prize in 1983. Corrsin died of cancer on 2 June 1986 at the age of 66. Education and career Corrsin was born on 3 April 1920 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He received his B.S. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1940. He entered the California Institute of Technology for his graduate studies and worked in the Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory under Theodore von Kármán. After receiving his M.S. degree in 1942, Corrsin joined the Ph.D. program under the supervision of Hans Liepmann and obtained the degree in 1947. Bernard Budiansky
Bernard Budiansky (; 8 March 1925 – 23 January 1999) was an American scholar in the field of applied mechanics, and made seminal contributions to the mechanics of structures and mechanics of materials. He was a recipient of the Timoshenko Medal. Biography Budiansky was born in New York City on March 8, 1925, to Russian immigrant parents, Louis and Rose (Chaplick) Budiansky. Upon obtaining a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from City College of New York in 1944 when he was barely over 19, he became an aeronautical research scientist at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA, forerunner to NASA) at Langley Field, Virginia. Chia-Shun Yih
Chia-Shun Yih (; July 25, 1918 – April 25, 1997) was the Stephen P. Timoshenko Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan. He made many significant contributions to fluid mechanics. Yih was also a seal artist. Biography Yih was born on July 25, 1918, in Guiyang, Guizhou province of China. Yih received his junior middle school education in Zhenjiang, and entered Suzhou High School in 1934 in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. In 1937, Yih entered the National Central University and studied civil engineering. Yih graduated in 1941 then did research at a hydrodynamics laboratory in Guanxian (or Guan County; 灌县; current Dujiangyan) of Sichuan province. Yih also worked in a bridge construction company in Guizhou. Later, Yih taught at Guizhou University.
