Thelma Ready
Thelma Constance Ready (1903-2004) was an Australian banjo musician, based in Melbourne. Career Thelma Ready was born in Tasmania 23 September 1903, and begun playing banjo when her father visited America and bought the instrument for her as a gift. After taking lessons, she began finding work as a soloist and as leader of her own orchestra. She led what is considered "Australia's first all-girl dance band", The Thelma Ready Orchestra in Melbourne during the 1920s. The band were formed in 1928, and featured Ready (banjo), Kath McCall (piano), Lena Sturrock (violin), Alice Organ/Dolphin (saxophone, clarinet, cornet), and Lillian Stender (vocals, drums). They had residencies at the Mayfair Cafe in St Kilda, and hotels such as Menzies, Oriental, and Hotel Australia, as well as regular appearances on radio. Banjo
The banjo is a stringed instrument with a thin membrane stretched over a frame or cavity to form a resonator. The membrane is typically circular, and usually made of plastic, or occasionally animal skin. Early forms of the instrument were fashioned by African Americans in the United States. The banjo is frequently associated with folk, bluegrass and country music, and has also been used in some rock, pop and hip-hop. Several rock bands, such as the Eagles, Led Zeppelin, and the Grateful Dead, have used the five-string banjo in some of their songs. Historically, the banjo occupied a central place in Black American traditional music and the folk culture of rural whites before entering the mainstream via the minstrel shows of the 19th century. Alice Dolphin
Alice Isobel Dolphin (née Organ; 1900–1985) was an Australian musician who played clarinet, saxophone, piano, and cornet. Career Alice Dolphin was born in Cheltenham, Victoria. Her family were musicians and she learnt to play piano as a child, performing in public for the first time around the age of 10, when she filled in on organ at a church. During her teens she began her professional career as a musician, performing at picture theatre matinees, and gained press attention by playing the piano and cornet simultaneously, accompanying her own solos. Between 1923 and 1926, Dolphin played in different musical groups around Melbourne, before moving to Sydney to perform as a duo with Elsa Lewis. After two years, Dolphin returned to Melbourne with violin maker William Edward Dolphin where they married. When Thelma Ready started her all-girl orchestra, she hired Alice Dolphin as a saxophonist. Hotel Australia
The Hotel Australia was a former hotel in Melbourne, Australia. The hotel was built in 1939 on the site of the former Cafe Australia (which had opened in 1916), and was demolished in 1989. Designed by Leslie M. Perrott, the Hotel Australia was a 12-storey building with 94 rooms, numerous private dining and function rooms, and was the most prestigious hotel in Melbourne in its day. The hotel included two small cinemas, a restaurant and bar in the basement, and a through-block shopping arcade on the ground floor which was touted as the largest in Australia, known as the Australia Arcade. Rudolph Ready
Rudolph Keith Ready (15 December 1878 – 28 July 1958) was an Australian politician and businessman. He was a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and served as a Senator for Tasmania from 1910 to 1917, including as Government Whip from 1914 to 1917. He is primarily remembered for the controversial circumstances of his resignation. Early life Ready was born on 15 December 1878 in Latrobe, Tasmania. He was the son of Mary (née Mumford) and Samuel Ready, his father working as a saddler. He attended a local primary school and also studied at the Latrobe Commercial College before being apprenticed as a draper. At the age of 19 he was appointed as the manager of the Button Brothers store in Campbell Town. Springvale Botanical Cemetery
The Springvale Botanical Cemetery is the largest crematorium and memorial park in Victoria, Australia. It is located in Springvale, in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne. History Originally known as The Necropolis Springvale, the cemetery commenced operations in 1901. Between 1904 and 1952 it was served by its own railway branch line and station, by which coffins, passengers and staff were conveyed to the cemetery. The first cremation took place at Springvale in April 1905. According to the Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust, here have been approximately 473,000 cremations and 162,000 burials at the Springvale Botanical Cemetery. In 2006, the cemetery was renamed the Springvale Botanical Cemetery to reflect its increasing botanical significance, which includes original plantings of two bunya-bunya pines, palms and gums.
