The Zeros (American Band)
The Zeros are an American punk rock band, formed in 1976 in Chula Vista, California. The band was originally composed of Javier Escovedo (younger brother of Alejandro Escovedo, older brother of Mario Escovedo of The Dragons) on vocals/guitar and Robert Lopez (later known as El Vez) on guitar, who were both attending Chula Vista High School; Hector Penalosa, (bass), and Baba Chenelle, (drums), who attended Sweetwater High School. Sometimes compared to the Ramones, the band was considered a pioneer of punk rock on the West Coast. Biography In 1977, The Zeros played their first major gig in Los Angeles at the Orpheum. Opening the show was the first performance by The Germs, followed by The Zeros and then The Weirdos. The gig was promoted by Peter Case of The Nerves, who later served as the frontman of The Breakaways and The Plimsouls. The Zeros, originally known as The Double “O” Zeros, were a glam metal and glam punk band from Los Angeles. Characterized by their matching purple hair, the band was a prominent figure on the Hollywood, Los Angeles, Hollywood club scene of the late 1980s – early 1990s. In 1991 the band’s record label Restless Records had the nightclubs Whisky a Go Go and Coconut Teaszer painted purple to commemorate the release of their album ''4-3-2-1 The Zeros''. History As The Double “O” Zeros The Double “O” Zeros formed in 1982, in New Jersey and consisted of lead vocalist Sammy Serious, guitarist Joe “Normal” Hutchinson, bassist Mace Byers and drummer Jim “Mr. Insane” Hutchinson. The Zeros were one of the early England, English punk rock, punk Band (music), groups, as chronicled in 77: The Year of Punk and New Wave, Henrik Poulsen's book ''77: The Year of Punk and New Wave''. Career Originally a trio, they were led by Steve Godfrey (guitar/vocals, b.1959, Walthamstow, London), the cousin of Jerry Shirley of Humble Pie (band), Humble Pie. The two other members were Phil Gaylor (drums/vocals) and Steve Cotton (bass/vocals). They released a single (music), single called "Hungry" in November 1977 on the Small Wonder Records record label, label. "Hungry" was No 1 in the NME punk chart. That same month, they recorded four songs, including "Hungry," for BBC Radio 1 with John Peel. Paul Miller (guitar/vocals) joined in early 1978.
