''The Whipping Man'' is a play by Matthew López set in the immediate aftermath of the American Civil War during Passover. ''The Inheritance'' is a play by Matthew López, inspired by the 1910 novel ''Howards End'' by E. M. Forster. The play premiered in London at the Young Vic in March 2018, before transferring to Broadway in November 2019. Charles Splaine Isherwood Jr. (born October 1964) is an American theater critic. Career A graduate of Stanford University, Isherwood wrote for '' Backstage West'' in Los Angeles. Irony, in its broadest sense, is the juxtaposition of what, on the surface, appears to be the case with what is actually or expected to be the case. The Obie Awards or Off-Broadway Theater Awards are annual awards given since 1956 by ''The Village Voice'' newspaper to theater artists and groups involved in off-Broadway and off-off-Broadway productions in New York City.
