The Vrooom Sessions
''The Vrooom Sessions'' is an album of studio writing sessions and rehearsals by the band King Crimson, released through the King Crimson Collector's Club in December 1999. It comprises outtakes from the sessions at Applehead Studios, Woodstock, New York which yielded their 1994 comeback EP, '' Vrooom''. These were the first studio recordings made by the six-piece King Crimson after Robert Fripp reformed the band in 1994 - what he referred to as the "Double Trio" lineup - with the addition of Trey Gunn as second Chapman Stick player and Pat Mastelotto as second drummer. Fripp had recently worked with both men in the Sylvian/Fripp touring band, as documented on the live album ''Damage''. King Crimson
King Crimson were an English progressive rock band formed in London in 1968 by Robert Fripp, Michael Giles, Greg Lake, Ian McDonald (musician), Ian McDonald and Peter Sinfield. Guitarist Fripp remained the only constant member throughout the band's long history. The band drew inspiration from a wide variety of music, incorporating elements of classical music, classical, jazz, folk music, folk, heavy metal music, heavy metal, gamelan, blues, industrial (music), industrial, electronic music, electronic, and experimental music. They exerted a strong influence on the early 1970s progressive rock movement, including on contemporaries such as Yes (band), Yes and Genesis (band), Genesis, and continue to inspire subsequent generations of artists across multiple genres. Trey Gunn
Trey Gunn (born December 13, 1960) is an American musician, known for being in the progressive rock band King Crimson from 1994 to 2003. He plays Warr Guitar and Chapman Stick instruments. Biography A native Texan who now resides in New Mexico, Gunn began playing classical piano when he was 7. He has also played electric bass, electric and acoustic guitar, keyboards, and the touch guitar. He moved to Eugene, Oregon and played in punk bands while earning a degree in classical music composition at the University of Oregon. Next, he moved to New York City and began a professional career in music. For a while he was a student of Guitar Craft with founder Robert Fripp and appeared on several Robert Fripp as well as the League of Crafty Guitarists recordings. Electric Upright Bass
The electric upright bass (EUB) is an instrument that can perform the musical function of a double bass. It requires only a minimal or 'skeleton' body to produce sound because it uses a pickup and electronic amplifier and loudspeaker. Therefore, a large resonating structure is not required to project the sound into the air. This minimal body greatly reduces the bulk and weight of the instrument. EUBs must always be connected to an amplifier and speaker cabinet to produce an adequate audible sound. The EUB retains enough of the features of the double bass so that double bass players are able to perform on it. Types There are two types: solid-body EUBs and hollowbody EUBs. Solid-body EUBs have no hollow enclosure for the body and, as such, they produce almost no sound without electronic amplification. Op Zop Too Wah
''Op Zop Too Wah'' is the tenth solo album by Adrian Belew. The original title was ''On'' with a close-up of an on/off switch as the cover. However, Belew noticed an English band, Echobelly, had released an album with the same title. ''Op Zop Too Wah'' comes from a series of nonsensical words Belew invented in high school with his friend, Mike Wilshire. Following the indifferent reception given to Belew's previous album (the experimental ''The Guitar As Orchestra''), ''Op Zop Too Wah'' is a return to more traditional songwriting. The album's mood is reminiscent of the more avant-garde approach carried out by The Beatles in the late 1960s on albums such as ''Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band''. Bill Bruford
William Scott Bruford (born 17 May 1949) is an English drummer and percussionist who first gained prominence as a founding member of the progressive rock band Yes. After leaving Yes in 1972, Bruford spent the rest of the 1970s recording and touring with King Crimson (1972–1974), Roy Harper (1975), and U.K. (1978), as well as touring with Genesis (1976). In 1978, he formed his own group, Bruford, which was active until 1980. During the 1980s, Bruford returned to King Crimson for three years (1981–1984), collaborated with several artists (including Patrick Moraz and David Torn), and formed his own electric jazz band Earthworks in 1986. He then played with his former Yes bandmates in Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe, which eventually led to a very brief second stint in Yes. Tony Levin
Anthony Frederick Levin (born June 6, 1946) is an American musician and composer specializing in electric bass guitars, Chapman Stick and upright bass. He also sings and plays synthesizer. Levin is best known for his work with King Crimson (1981–2021) and Peter Gabriel (since 1977). He is also a member of Liquid Tension Experiment (1997–1999, 2008–2009, 2020–present), Bruford Levin Upper Extremities (1998–2000) and HoBoLeMa (2008–2010). He has led his own band, Stick Men, since 2010. A prolific session musician since the 1970s, Levin has played on over 500 albums. Adrian Belew
Robert Steven "Adrian" Belew (born December 23, 1949) is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. A multi-instrumentalist primarily known as a guitarist and singer, he is noted for his unusual approach to the instrument, his playing cited as fluid, expressive, and often resembling "animal noises or mechanical rumblings". Widely recognized as an "incredibly versatile [guitar] player", Belew is perhaps best known for his tenure as guitarist and frontman in the progressive rock group King Crimson between 1981 and 2009. David Sylvian
David Sylvian (born David Alan Batt; 23 February 1958) is an English musician, singer and songwriter who came to prominence in the late 1970s as frontman and principal songwriter of the band Japan (band), Japan. During his time in Japan, Sylvian was known for his unique baritone voice, idiosyncratic approach to songwriting, and his distinctive androgynous appearance. The band's androgynous look and increasingly Electronic music, electronic sound made them an important influence on the UK's early-1980s new wave music, new wave scene. Pat Mastelotto
Lee Patrick Mastelotto (born September 10, 1955) is an American rock drummer and record producer. He has been a member of King Crimson, Stick Men, Mr. Mister and O.R.k., as well as working as a session drummer with XTC, The Pointer Sisters and The Rembrandts (including well known Friends theme song I'll Be There for You), among others. In addition, he has led or co-led other projects including Mastica, Tuner, TU and The Mastelottos. For King Crimson, he initially formed part of the "Double Trio" lineup from 1994 to 1997, working with Bill Bruford as part of a double-drumkit arrangement. Following Bruford's departure in 1997, Mastelotto remained with Mr. Mister, becoming their longest-serving drummer and working both solo and in various configurations with subsequent drummers Gavin Harrison, Bill Rieflin and Jeremy Stacey.
